With its revamped V-6 engine now making 302 horsepower, Cadillac seems to be making the case that the optional V-8 is no longer necessary. Significant among its attributes is direct fuel injection, which squirts the fuel into the combustion chamber rather than the intake track. The compression ratio for this GM V-6, which is only in the 2008 STS for now, is 11. 3:1 (compared with 10. 2:1 in last year's V-6). With variable intake- and exhaust-valve timing, power surges to 302 horsepower from 254 and the torque is 272... It'll take a finely calibrated backside to feel the difference between the new STS V-6 and the optional 320-hp V-8 model, which last year came bundled with several features and as a result cost about $9500 more. With this punchier V-6, Cadillac has seen fit to offer the performance handling package that used to be available only with the V-8. It includes a stiffer suspension, Brembo brakes, special wheels with summer tires, and retuned steering gear. The handling package should cost about $1600. Unless you want the four-wheel-drive STS, which doesn't offer the handling package, don't skip this option-equipped with it, the STS absorbs potholes and frost heaves with the right level of firmness,... When we first reported on Cadillac's refreshed 2008 STS from the New York auto show, we quoted the new base engine-a 3. 6-liter DOHC direct-injection V-6-at 298 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque. More Power, More Refinement, More mpg, More Gears. We are strong advocates of increasing power in all engines, but this is not an issue we take lightly. Engines cannot be merely stronger. In this, the STS delights, being noticeably more powerful-up 47 horsepower and 20 pound-feet on the powerplant it replaces-as well as higher revving (7000 rpm versus 6700), better sounding, and marginally more fuel efficient. Attached to that new engine is the six-speed automatic from the STS V-8. Combined with the more powerful 3. 6, the duo is good for 0-to-60-mph sprints in a claimed 6. 5 seconds, a projection we consider fully doable after our first contact with... As we mentioned in our New York coverage, the 2008 STS receives a new grille inspired by the Sixteen concept. Elsewhere, the exterior is all jeweled up with chrome door handles and trunklid trim plus fender "air extractors" that don't function since air can't pass through solid plastic. We like, but don't love, the Cadillac STS. Reason being, its base V-6 model is tepid, and the V-8 model, although robust, is heavy and expensive. Well, good news: For 2008, the STS gets a 298-hp, 3. 6-liter direct-injection V-6 standard, and the styling is livened up by adopting a cue or two from the stunning Cadillac Sixteen show car. Now, whereas the 2008 STS still ain't no Sixteen, its larger, "multitextured" Cadillac family grille brings it a bit closer, adding some much-needed presence to its previously vacant expression. Interior updates include a new dash design and a new steering wheel with optional sapele pommele wood trim. The base engine is now the same V-6 as that in the STS's little brother, the 2008 CTS. Besides the mill's additional horsepower (44 more than the 2007 model) and 268 pound-feet of torque (16 more than last year's), the new 3. 6 is said to suck down less fuel while spewing fewer emissions.
