Like all the German carmakers, BMW has a preference for diesel power over hybrids in the search for improved fuel efficiency. The ActiveHybrid 3—or “3-series hybrid” to those who prefer nomenclature that’s not fairly dripping with marketing goo—uses BMW’s 300-hp, 3. 0-liter turbocharged six, coupled to a ZF eight-speed automatic in which the torque converter has been... It’s the same gasoline-electric system in the ActiveHybrid 5 , and it is also being adopted for the repositioned 2013 ActiveHybrid 7. Batteries Included. Power for the electric motor comes from a 1. 3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack made from 96 cylindrical cells from supplier A123 Systems. The 317-volt battery, which weighs 101 pounds with its internal cooling apparatus, can also power the electric air-conditioning compressor. One is devoted to energizing the engine starter, the other to various other electrical systems that include the electric power steering and the brakes. The gasoline engine and the electric motor produce a combined output of 335 ponies, as well as 332 lb-ft of torque—35 and 32 more than developed by the conventionally powered 335i. DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: Comparing this 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 to the 328i may be a logical leap, but it's flawed thanks to a single, critical detail: The ActiveHybrid 3 gets BMW's exquisite straight six-cylinder versus the coarse turbo four... If you're a true BMW enthusiast -- as in a marque devotee -- there's no substitute for the straight six. If your station in life or your eco-conscience demands the hybrid moniker, then the ActiveHybrid 3 will be your selection. I've made no bones about my opinion of the four-cylinder 3-series (I hate it), and it took all of three seconds behind the wheel of the ActiveHybrid 3 to remind me what a real 3-series feels like. Even with the electrical soft-start and initial motor input, the presence of BMW's inline six is felt instantly. While fuel economy is impressive, things aren't perfect with the ActiveHybrid mechanism. There was a stumble in the gear change that felt like clutch judder, so I'm not sure if this is a characteristic of the ActiveHybrid 3 or an issue with the eight-speed transmission in our particular tester. The sweet spot for this car is the 335, but if you absolutely have to have a hybrid, at least you can rest assured your ActiveHybrid 3 comes with a worthy BMW powerplant under the hood. It certainly falls within the realm of BMW owners’ expectations. The 2013 BMW Active Hybrid 3 is “fuel-efficient,” especially for a BMW. That’s something for a BMW. But there is nothing economical about it. The Active Hybrid 3 requires more expensive premium gasoline. BMW’s marketers boast that the Active Hybrid 3 is “the world’s first full hybrid among compact sedans in the premium segment. The world’s first full gas-electric hybrid, the Toyota Prius, runs rings around the BMW Active Hybrid 3 in the arena of fuel economy. It gets nearly 50 miles per gallon in combined city-highway driving, and it drinks regular-grade fuel.
