If this sounds like high-brow automotive schizophrenia, know that each enhancement achieves the purpose stated by the Supersports name, contributing small but effective measures that elevate the Supersports out of the sphere where normal... “We took the look of the [Continental] GT and tweaked it a little to give it a little more menace,” said Bentley board-member-in-chief Stuart McCullough during the press introduction of the Supersports in upstate New York. Gloss black also finishes the lower-body spear trim and window surrounds, and the rear spoiler features an extra lip contour for aero purposes. At any moment you expect it to unfold into a giant robot and start bench-pressing 747s. The Supersports name sounds quintessentially British, what we expect from the chuffed ironmongers at Bentley. Black, fine-spoke 20-inch wheels harboring huge carbon-ceramic discs add bigness to the complexion of the Supersports. A mere 157 feet separates 70 mph from zero—yet another astounding number—but a relentless, maddening squeak made the Bentley sound like a city bus around town. Continentals have always been effective handlers despite their bulk. The Supersports corners as if its entire underbelly is just one giant tire. It was previously referred to simply as “the extreme Bentley,” but the crew from Crewe has now shared the proper name and details of the baddest Continental in the land. The Supersports badge is, of course, rooted in the company’s long history, as a 3-Liter Supersports was introduced in 1925 to follow the 3-Liter Speed—fitting since this new Continental Supersports is an evolution of the GT Speed. What’s so super about it. For starters, it’s the fastest and most powerful Bentley ever to see production. The company is also excited to let us know that the Supersports will run on E85 as well as plain gasoline, helping the marque build up to its promise of offering a biofuel option for all of its vehicles by 2012. That will help the company’s CAFE... Stowed under a newly vented hood is a reworked version of Bentley’s 6. 0-liter W-12 putting out 621 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Bentley will fit a strengthened version of the six-speed ZF automatic (found in lesser Continentals) to deal with the extra power. The car’s all-wheel-drive system uses a 40/60 rear torque bias instead of the standard Continental’s 50/50 split. Source: www.caranddriver.com
