Although it hasn’t quite achieved the level of, say, Porsche’s 911 or the VW Beetle, the Audi TT is a design icon nonetheless—just a bit younger. As a style-first, sport-infused incarnation of the Audi A3/VW GTI platform, the TT would be no more remarkable if not for its rounded overhang areas, Bauhaus-inspired geometry, and chopped roofline. Although the TT dons fresh duds for 2011, none of its essential characteristics change. What has changed are the headlamps of base TT 2. 0 TFSI coupes and roadsters, which now adopt the winged-detail, LED-underscored headlamps first seen on the more potent TTS model, which was introduced last year. Minor changes of even less note have been made inside the TT—just some new aluminum trim on the steering wheel and center console and a few piano-black pieces elsewhere. Under the skin, the TT 2. 0 TFSI now comes with a zestier turbocharged 2. 0-liter four-banger with 211 hp (up from 201) and a very potent 258 lb-ft of torque (up from 207), mated exclusively to Audi’s S tronic dual-clutch automated manual and... Gone are the front-wheel-drive TT and the manual transmission. We have high hopes for the base TT, which arrives in the first quarter of 2011. The GTI, speak of the devil, is the main reason I have trouble truly embracing the TTS. Taken on its own merits, this TT is a perfectly reasonable $50,000 sport coupe - great-looking, executed to the usual Audi standards, and fun to drive in weather that puts most coupes in the garage. It's basically an affluent adult's alternative to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, which isn't an unfair comparison when you remember that the Evo MR isn't all that cheap these days. True, the VW is less powerful and down two drive wheels, yet it offers just as much reward behind the wheel, is very nearly as refined, and costs a solid $20,000 less. - David Zenlea , Assistant Editor Every time I drive an Audi TT I have similar thoughts: it's no Porsche Cayman (or Boxster), but man, this is still a very cool car. To the interior's credit are comfortable seats, surprisingly ample luggage space, and a sporty yet functional design (although I miss the knob-control MMI system from Audi's larger cars). Winter tires and all-wheel drive, as found in this test car, make the TT an excellent four-season sports car, something the Porsche can't say -- although neither of them have much ground clearance if the plows don't get to your street. Audi’s climb up the luxury ladder to a full-bore, take-’em-seriously competitor to BMW and Mercedes has been powered by volume models like the A4 and A6 sedans and Q5 crossover, but the first-generation Audi TT certainly helped the brand skip a... If the second-gen TT’s styling hasn’t taken a leap forward—although it’s still pretty stunning to behold—its performance certainly has, moving the car toward actual sports-car territory for the first time. The transformation was finally completed with the introduction of the 2010 TTS. With the disappearance of the 3. 2-liter V-6 from the TT’s engine options last year, the 2. 0T model got some room to breathe. As such, the entry-level 2011 TT gets an improved version of the 2. 0-liter EA888 turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder. The valve lift on the exhaust side is now variable, and horsepower rises from 200 to 211. More important, however, is that torque takes a huge leap from 207 lb-ft to a lofty 258.
