Audi's svelte, powerful S6 needs no introduction – principally because we've tested it once before. Originally booked for a multi-car comparison that fell through at the last moment, the S6 arrived on the scene with no partners pencilled in on its dance card. Rather than leave the 309kW turbo V8-engined sedan parked for the week it received the counterpoint treatment – would a different reviewer arrive at a different conclusion about the S6. The Audi S6 for this test came equipped with a couple of... But depending on the prospective buyer's sense of spatial awareness and penny-wise/pound-foolish approach to car buying, it might be hard to justify the added outlay. As for lane-keeping and side assist technology, it can be disconcerting for the driver. It couldn't match a Panamera GTS I had driven previously, but there wasn't that much in it. Although the Panamera is a larger car – and nearly double the price – it was like the S6 in being powered by a turbocharged V8 driving through a... 2014 Audi S6 Avant first drive review - Autocar

What is it. : A facelifted version of Audi’s S6 Avant, which comes with revised headlights, redesigned wheels and some very minor interior changes. Audi clearly believes its twin-turbocharged 4. 0-litre V8 petrol unit and standard seven-speed dual clutch S-tronic automatic don’t require any major fettling to keep the luxury estate in the hunt. Nor has there been any alteration to the mechanically operated Torsen torque sensing four-wheel-drive system. On a heavily pegged throttle, the in-gear acceleration is relentless – perhaps not quite as extreme as that offered by the more powerful RS7 but sufficient enough for fast lane superiority over all but the most exotic machinery. Despite tipping the scales at a rather hefty 1960kg, the S6 Avant is claimed to hit 62mph in just 4. 6sec, and it accelerates hard up to the limiter at 155mph. Audi’s traditional quattro four-wheel-drive system nominally sends the majority of drive to the rear wheels, but is quick to react when the front wheels have more purchase and the rears are slipping. It also includes a so-called Sport differential that juggles power between each individual rear wheel for added purchase. The benefits are most obvious during hard acceleration in lower gears and at the exit of a corner, where the S6 Avant provides exceptional drive no matter what the weather conditions. If I had to pick a car from this class, I’m almost... Funny enough, I drove a CTS Vsport shortly before hopping into the 2014 Audi S6, so both cars are still fairly fresh in my mind. From a fun-to-drive standpoint, I think the CTS wins over the S6. Caddy has done a great job with its chassis tuning to create some real engaging cars. But overall if I was looking for a car that would be used mostly as a daily street car, I would end up with a S6. To my eye, it looks better than the CTS and I like the interior better with infotainment functions controlled with MMI and a good a... The sport seats in the S6 are just right with support in all the right places to keep you in place and comfy during drives. And with Audi Drive Select in comfort mode, the S6 is a more relaxed car in my opinion with the suspension smoothing things out nicely and steering being light in effort. It also sounds pretty good with a lower key rumble when you boot it. Just because I said I think the CTS Vsport wins out over the S6 in the fun department doesn’t mean the Audi is a dull ride.
