It’s a dramatic sliver of a car, with a windshield so brutally raked that it’s impossible to see some overhead traffic lights from the driver’s seat, and a fastback roof that would have even Bilbo Baggins ducking to get in through the rear doors. In Narnia, 470 horsepower may seem like a lot, but in Car and Driver ’s world, that left the regular old Rapide behind muggle-spec competitors like the bulbous Porsche Panamera Turbo S. In the 2014 model year, the British automaker released the more powerful Rapide S model, and in the following year it received a slight power boost and a new Touchtonic III transmission. For the new model year, Aston Martin The 2015 Aston Martin Rapide S GREAT edition’s exterior is all about minor alterations that do a great job at changing the look of the sedan just enough to set it apart. The front lip spoiler is the most obvious, but there is also a blue “GREAT” decal and blue mesh inserts in the vents on the front fenders. I am sure the rear has its own blue accents, but Aston did not release any rear shots of the car. This pattern may not be immediately noticeable, but it is a nice touch to set it apart from other Rapide S models. Q by Aston Martin went above and beyond in making the cabin of the GREAT edition Rapide S an awesome place to be. The entire cockpit is decked out in high-end materials in the same blue that accents the exterior. Things like the red Aston wings on the seatbacks, the silver speaker covers on the doors, the white contrast stitching, the black bezel on the center console, and the black pull handles all help keep the cabin from being overwhelmingly blue. Aside from its stunning sheetmetal, you might wonder what all the fuss is about the Aston Martin Rapide. ) But Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez, in a fit of understandable partisanship, insists his car is something unique. he claims the Rapide is “the only four-door sports car in the world. Think of the stratospherically priced Rapide—the base cost is $201,300—as a stretched, four-door DB9, and Bez seems only mildly insane. His point is that the Rapide is a sports car first and a sedan second, unlike other cars in the segment, which he says have all had their styling and dynamics compromised in the name of rear-seat accommodations or comfort. And any arguments that can’t be won by playing the “sports car” card are dismissed by playing up the Rapide’s exclusivity, as annual production will number 2000 or so units worldwide. The engine and transmission in the Rapide are straight from the DB9. If you haven’t already memorized those specs, we’ll repeat them for you. Like the DB9 and the rest of the Aston Martin lineup, the Rapide is based on the extruded-aluminum VH architecture.
