One might say that starting with one of the worlds truly most achingly beautiful cars would defeat the objective at hand – namely trying to improve on modern day automotive perfection. That was my challenge when I decided to buy and improve a 2001 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Volante V12, with just 15,000 miles and one ‘famous’ Las Vegas owner. Ian Callum, now head of design at Jaguar and personally responsible for the stunning new XF, was tasked in the early nineties with creating a modern day GT that would save Aston Martin and its dwindling sales. He produced the DB7, first in 3. 2 liter straight six supercharged form, and from 2000 in final 5. 9 liter V12 configuration, the same base engine that you find in the Vanquish, the Le Mans winning race cars, the DB9 and the latest and very... Ian is still very proud of what became Astons best selling car, ‘we really worked on the athletics as much as the driving dynamic, and with the V12 I had to fight to get the more aggressive front, particularly the driving lights which Jacques... After driving the Pentland Green 420bhp Bloxham built beast home to Hollywood from Scottsdale, I realized fast that the sophisticated and rather muffled exhaust note was for more mature owners and not for one who had just traded in a 400bhp Jag... Denmark, though — Denmark has long bucked the interlocking molds of its neighbors’ boxy practicality. Henrik Fisker was arguably the only good thing to come out of the entire Ford-Aston affair. Not content to rest on his well-deserved laurels, Fisker launched his own car company from sunny California, where he’s still making history by influencing fellow revolutionaries like Tesla. Last year, at the LA Auto Show, he introduced the Mustang Rocket, a 725-horsepower joint venture with California’s Galpin Auto Sports. Looking for all the world like the three-way love child of a Mustang, Aston and Spyker, the Rocket is set to retail for about $100,000 fresh from Galpin’s showroom floor. It’s true: a $100,000 Mustang does seem like a slightly absurd proposition, regardless of the name on the design sheet. Perhaps recognizing that a six-figure pony car is a tough sell, Henrik and Galpin officially went back to the well at the 2015 Amelia Island Concrous d’Elegance. This week, Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum received the ‘Minerva Medal’. Awarded by the Chartered Society of Designers, it’s their highest accolade, and only given to recognise lifetime achievement. Callum is the first car designer to pick up the prize since supercar scribbler Giorgetto Giugiaro, who received the award in 1981. And so in celebration of the Scottish designer’s rich body of work, we’ve gathered together our favourite Callum... Callum’s body of work is comprehensive, and his greatest hits plentiful enough for nearly everything he’s designed to be someone’s favourite. Well, it’s made to look a complete pussycat by the R390. Callum helped pen Nissan’s top-class Le Mans competitor, which spawned a pair of road-going hypercars before that was even a genre. With its twin-turbo 3. 5-litre V8 engine serving up around 640bhp, it can complete 0-100mph in 6. 5sec on its journey to a top speed beyond 220mph, making this much faster than even the Nismo version of the GT-R. Another super looking car from competition, Ford’s bonkers Group B rally entrant was homologated by 200 road-going RS200s. the rally car produced up to 450bhp, while the showroom iteration was a little tamed, with 250bhp.
