Car Talk: Costly headlight replacement is Acura's fault - Columbus Dispatch

Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 2004 Acura RL that had developed an intermittent headlight problem where one of the headlights would go off unexpectedly. The quick solution was to turn the lights off and then immediately back on, and the faulty headlight also would come back on. My local Acura dealer’s service department indicated that any one of three separate headlight components could be the... They advised replacing all three because the labor to replace any one of them individually would be the same. The total bill was as follows: Inverter — $364, igniter — $180, bulb — $178, labor — $318. With tax, the total repair came to $1,113. Have I just been given a good hosing, or are these reasonable charges for this type of repair for this vehicle. Ray: And that’s why they suggested replacing all three components, Kyle. I’m sure at some point in history, they replaced just the bulb for some customer, charged him $500, and then had to go back in and replace the inverter and igniter, and charge him another $900. Tom: That’s not a phone call you want to make twice... And yes, you also got hosed, because Acura designed a car that requires you to remove the front bumper in order to change a headlight bulb. If you were at all car-aware in the 1990s and 2000s, Acura was squarely on your radar. From the brand's first Legends, to the iconic Integra, to the follow-up RSX and the halo-status NSX, Acura's lineup always included something for the gearheads among us, complete with honest-to-goodness manual transmissions. Come the 2016 model year, the only three-pedal vehicle left in Acura's lineup—the somewhat slow-selling, Civic-based ILX—will lose its six-speed stick in favor of a dual-clutch automatic. That's a strange shift for the brand that helped define the affordable end of automotive enthusiasm in North America these past three decades. "The trend is clear for Acura as it has been for virtually every premium brand as well as mainstream brands," Sam Abuelsamid, senior analyst at Navigant Research , told R&T. "There has been a shift in the marketplace away from cars to crossovers... Climbing out of that ditch means Acura has to focus on moneymakers, not fringy enthusiast offerings. "As car sales volumes have continued to shrink over the past decade, and emissions and fuel economy regulations get tighter , it gets increasingly difficult to justify the resources necessary to engineer, calibrate and certify a manual... Inside, the infotainment interface has been revised (although the quality of its graphics remains largely the same), and genuine maple trim and a new Sea Coast interior color are now available. (Yes, Sea Coast could refer to just about any color, from sandy beige to watery blue to oil-slicked black. ) The most significant alteration is the upgrade from the previous five-speed auto to a six-speed box. It’s easy to forget what a nice car the RL is to drive—as consumers seemingly do on a regular basis—until you slide back into it. The naturally aspirated 3. 7-liter V-6 (generating 300 hp at 6300 rpm and 271 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm) pulls with... The six-speed RL hits 60 mph quicker than before—6. 1 seconds versus 6. 5 for a 2009 RL we tested —while also gaining 1 mpg in the city and 2 on the highway in EPA testing.
