Oracle Founder Larry Ellison Gave Away This Japanese Supercar As A Gift - Business Insider

The adventures of former Oracle CEO Larry Ellison are well chronicled. So it should come as no surprise that the Oracle founder's favorite four-wheeled vehicle is one that many believe to be the quintessential Japanese supercar, the Acura/Honda NSX. In fact, Ellison would reportedly buy a few of these $80,000 rides every year of the model's 15-year production run to give to friends and top employees as gifts and bonuses, reported Complex Magazine and USA Today. So what makes the NSX so worthy of Ellison's adulation. In the late 1980s, Honda (Acura's parent company) was all but unbeatable in the racing world. The company's Formula One engines powered drivers to six consecutive constructor's world champions and five straight driver's world championships. Power for the NSX would come from a 270hp — later 290hp — V6 loaded with engineering derived from Honda's adventures in F1. To make the car nimble, Honda built most of its supercar from lightweight aluminum. To craft the NSX's sleek body, the company relied upon the its chief designer Ken Okuyama, a man who Ferrari would turn to create its million-dollar Enzo Ferrari hypercar a decade later. The Acura NSX (New Sportscar Experimental)... The car was praised for its lightweight, aluminum body and low-slung form, coming in at only five inches taller than the Ford GT40. The car's precise cornering capability and rigid chassis can be attributed to input and testing during development... The NSX was only produced between 1990 and 2005. Current examples run from $20,000 to $40,000 for a decent, low-mileage version. The first one was meticulous, according to the seller, and the car has neither been on a track nor seen snow or salt-covered roads. The master cylinder, timing belt, accessory belt and water pump have also been replaced at various times, and the rear tires are only 500 miles old. The car currently calls Altadena, Calif. It was the Ford GT vs. the Acura NSX at the New York Auto Show - Business Insider

Two of the most recent examples pulled in to the New York Auto Show, which kicked off at the Javits Center in Manhattan last week. The Ford GT was the undisputed hit of the Detroit Auto Show back in January. "We kept it pretty secret" was the grinning, satisfied refrain we heard while making our media rounds in New York. Ford brought a GT, in dashing silver, to New York and let everyone just stand and gawk. Back in 1966, the GT's ancestors finished 1-2-3 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, settling a spat between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari and settling it good. Enzo had at the last minute rebuffed Henry II's desire to buy the storied Italian automaker – so Henry II took out his disappointment on the track. The GT that Ford unveiled in Detroit is – there's consensus about this in the automotive world – destined to restore Ford to glory at Le Mans in 2016, just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the epic win in '66. Meanwhile, about a... Like the GT, what makes it go is a turbocharged V-6. But unlike the GT, the engine has been hybridized through the addition of three electric motors.
