At the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, Chevrolet pulled the wraps off the Colorado ZR2 “concept,” testing the waters for market reaction to a more deliberately off-road–oriented version of its new midsize truck. But for now, the undisputed king of the midsize segment is the Toyota Tacoma. There have been multiple off-road–oriented versions of the Tacoma over the years, perhaps the best known being the two-wheel-drive PreRunner trim, as well as the TRD T|X Baja. But the new king of the Tacoma hill is the TRD Pro model, which joins the Tundra and 4Runner for 2016, giving Toyota’s truck and SUV lineup more aggressive off-road options following the discontinuation of the retro-styled FJ Cruiser for 2015.... The Tacoma TRD Pro features a 2-inch lift with specially tuned front coil springs and Bilstein remote-reservoir shocks. The ZR2 concept features King remote-reservoir shocks and a 2-inch lift. Included as part of the ZR2 transformation are new suspension control arms to maintain proper suspension geometry and more sure-footed off-road handling. Source: www.trucktrend.com

Toyota makes the Tacoma more adventure-ready with a TRD Pro model. ASSOCIATE EDITOR GRAHAM KOZAK: TRD trim or no, the Toyota Tacoma simply isn’t the nicest pickup truck on the market. But if you want to live out your “Back to the Future” fantasies with a most of the conveniences of a new truck (go on, I won’t judge), you’re just a roll bar and a lift kit and some black paint away from Marty McFly-dom. The Tacoma in general reminds me more of the Nissan Frontier than anything coming out of Detroit today -- it’s the smaller size, yes (the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon should shake things up), but also the lack of interior and ride refinement. From the plastics inside to the truck-like, trundling road feel, the Tacoma comes off as about 10 years old. this truck costs about $20,000 more than the base 2014 Tacoma. It almost seems to go without saying, but you’re only going to see the benefits of this truck if you live near, and regularly take advantage of, the sort of rugged terrain where you can enjoy its off-road features. I’m not sure that the TRD trucks have the same sort of built-in fanbase as Ford’s adrenaline-infused F-150s did, but maybe TRD’s. Source: autoweek.com
