1990 Ford F-350 Brake Upgrade - Them's The Brakes - Four Wheeler Network

And the ugly truth is that those big sexy tires increase your braking distances due to their increased weight and leverage. Fortunately, there are options out there to boost your braking, and in some instances, factory parts from other applications can even be used. In our case, we swapped a disc-brake Dana 70 rear axle into our ’90 F-350. We also upgraded the vacuum brake booster to hydroboost using factory Motorcraft parts that we sourced through RockAuto. Discs are universally recognized for providing shorter stopping distances, weighing less, and being easier to service than drum brakes. The hydroboost provides increased braking pressure when compared to a vacuum booster, and it works even if the engine dies or you have a diesel or lumpy camshaft that doesn’t produce much vacuum. Hydraulic boosters are also physically smaller than a vacuum booster, which is useful on applications where underhood space is at a premium due to factors like engine cages or shock mounts. Big wheels and tires can sometimes mean big sacrifice in steering. As Project Retro F-350 began to shape up, we noticed the meaty 40-inch tires stuffed under the 1-ton axles were making steering a real challenge especially when moving slow or stopped. The factory power steering was having a heck of a time trying to swing that much rubber around. We contacted AGR Performance out of Ft. Worth, Texas. We were familiar with AGR Performance on competition rigs and hard-core rock crawlers. We spoke with Larry Szuhy at AGR Performance about our 1979 Ford F-350 and its steering woes. He suggested we try the AGR Performance Rock Ram system. The hydraulic assist and higher flow pump and heavy-duty gearbox would make turning the 40s much easier. Because of the vintage of the truck, we had to remove our factory steering gear box and hydraulic steering pump to send into AGR Performance. AGR has most of the late model truck, 4x4 and Jeep parts in stock. Once AGR Performance had our parts in hand they re-worked them for more flow, added heavy-duty performance internals and completed the system with their AGR Rock Ram. Source: www.off-road.com
