Crash site witness: Pickup left no brake marks - Victoria Advocate

Victoria resident Raul Gutierrez was not passing any vehicle early Tuesday when he died in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer hauling sand north of Big Lake. Victoria police had been searching for him in connection with the death of his 43-year-old wife, Sonya Gutierrez, who was found dead Monday evening at her home, the victim of a brutal attack. The impact pushed Raul Gutierrez's mangled 2009 Suzuki Equator off a dark stretch of Farm-to-Market Road 33, which had a posted speed limit of 75 mph, said Mankin, who photographed the crash scene for his weekly newspaper. The Suzuki left no visible skid marks on the pavement leading up to the point of impact, Mankin said, and the force of the pickup sheared off the driver's side axle on the tractor. A Department of Public Safety report said Gutierrez, 35, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead by at the scene by Reagan County Justice of the Peace Patty Creech at 3:45 a. m. The wreck was 18 miles north of Big Lake in central west... Victoria police found Sonya Gutierrez Monday evening at a home in the 100 block of Londonderry Drive while responding to a welfare check. She and Sonya would be inside cooking while everyone collected around a TV in the garage to watch a football game or a fight on Pay-Per-View. Sunday, Salinas set up a GoFundMe account for their 9-year-old son, Matthew. Sonya Gutierrez's death has been ruled a homicide while Texas Department of Public Safety troopers think her husband fatally collided with an 18-wheeler head-on afterward. Raul Gutierrez was a person of interest in his wife's death. Salinas' son, Mario, is Matthew's best friend. They have played for years together on Northeast Little League teams and on the Stampede Elite football teams. Raul Gutierrez, 37, who worked as a Formosa contractor, once coached the boys.
