Banks Gets Over 500 Lb-Ft of Torque From 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel [Preview] - The Fast Lane

You likely know the Banks name as a tuner and power adder for the heavy duty pickup trucks. Naturally, the company went ahead to raise the power of the 3. 0L V6 EcoDiesel that is available in the Ram 1500 pickup trucks, as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The stock 3. 0L turbo-diesel motor produces 240 horsepower @ 3,600 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm. The company says that the Banks AutoMind ECU lifts the power level to 302 horsepower and the torque to over 500 lb-ft. The tuned power-plant is putting out over 100 horsepower per liter of displacement. By comparison, the V8 turbo-diesel in the current HD trucks are between 61 and 65 horsepower per liter in factory tune. Banks is also working on a power upgrade for the upcoming 5. 0-liter Cummins V8 that is going into the 2016 Nissan Titan. Ram rolls out 2016 model HD pickups - Fleet Owner

Topping the list of improvements is a new fuel delivery calculation and turbo boost calibration for the optional Cummins 6. 7-liter I-6 diesel engine offered for Ram’s HD pickup line. Jointly developed by Ram and Cummins engineers, those new tweaks help produce an additional 35 lb. -ft. of torque – boosting the 6. 7-liter diesel’s torque output from 865 lb. -ft. to 900 lb. -ft. That’s allowed Ram to beef up the towing capacity... Furthermore, to handle that increased towing capacity, Ram said its engineers beefed up the rear axle ring gear hardware on its 2016 models from 12 to 16 bolts on all trucks equipped with the 11. 8-inch axle. The OEM added that the maximum payload available for its HD pickup line is 7,390 lbs. Ram noted that the base sticker price for its 2016 model 2500 will be $31,485, with the price tag for its 2016 model 3500 pegged at $31,990. The OEM emphasized those prices not include a $1,195 destination charge. Ram added that 2016 model 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups will begin arriving in dealerships starting in the fourth quarter this year.   • 2013 Ram 2500/3500 HD Pickup Photos and Info – News – Car ...

    It’s time for the Texas State Fair, which means it’s also time for some pickup-truck news. To that end, Ram has introduced refreshed versions of its 3500 and 3500 HD pickups. The new trucks roll off the assembly line at the Saltillo truck plant in Coahuila, Mexico, starting in early January.

    Instead of waiting the traditional year or so after launching the 2013 light-duty 1500, Ram pulled forward the introduction of the heavy-duty versions to coincide with what it sees as a rebounding economy, and in particular an uptick in home building.

    Towing the Line—All of Them

    If you like the refresh Ram gave its 1500 series, chances are the 2500/3500 Heavy Duty Rams will catch your eye, too. The taller grille, generous use of LEDs in the exterior lighting, nicer interior materials, and wheel-to-wheel running boards of the Ram 1500 carry over here. But the big—and we do mean big—reasons for opting for the HD Ram are its trio of optional 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesels, one with 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque, another featuring 370 hp and 800 lb-ft, and a 3500-only high-output version with 385 hp and 850 lb-ft of twist. That last number is equivalent to the pulling power of almost seven Honda Civics, to put it in perspective.

    Ram estimates the big oil-burner’s 850 lb-ft will give it more grunt than Ford, Chevy, or GMC and best-in-class towing bragging rights. The exact numbers won’t be released until the Detroit auto show in January, but Ram president Fred Diaz confidently states that his truck will be way out in front of the competition. Rumor has it the max conventional towing number could be in excess of 20,000 pounds, which definitely throws down the gauntlet in the towing war. (The 2012 Ford Super Duty maxes out at 17,500 pounds in this measurement and GM’s HD trucks at 18,000. The latter are due to be replaced soon, and the Super Duty is surely in for an upgrade.) A look at the optional factory-integrated fifth-wheel and gooseneck mount, as well as the Class 5 receiver hitch of the 3500 dually make it clear that Ram means business.

    This is one category where the standard 5.7-liter gas-powered Hemi V-8 is like bringing a knife to a gunfight, with “just” 383 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, less than half max torque available from the largest diesel. But for 2500-series buyers who don’t want or need a diesel, the Hemi gas engine is available. It’s also a choice in the 3500 series for the first time.

    Tow and Row, How We Like It

    Pickup-truck and manual-gearbox lovers rejoice; the 350-hp version of the Cummins-powered Ram is sticking with a stick. (We tested one a couple of years ago.) It’s the only full-size pickup still available with a proper stir-your-own manual gearbox, in this case a six-speed unit built by Daimler. Ram claims about one in ten diesels are sold with the self-shifter. HD Rams equipped with automatic transmissions stay traditional as well, eschewing the Ram 1500’s dash-mounted rotary shift knob for a conventional column-mounted shifter calloused hands can get a grip on.

    Brew-your-own diesel-fuel fans recycling their French-fry grease will be pleased to know the new Cummins engines can run on B20 biodiesel. But in order to meet more stringent emissions regulations, urea-injection exhaust after-treatment is now required. The system injects the urea fluid into the exhaust to control NOx emissions; there is a separate eight-gallon tank for the fluid, which needs to be topped off every 3000-to-5000 miles (depending on vehicle usage and duty cycles) via a tube behind the fuel-filler door or when “add diesel fluid” instrument-panel messages flash at the driver. Here’s a tip: Don’t spill any on your shoes.

    The big 2500/3500 HD Rams don’t get the 1500 model’s fancy optional air suspension with adjustable ride height. But electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and trailer-sway control are now standard across the board and there’s a new “smart” exhaust brake on diesel models that Ram claims irons out on/off transitions during deceleration.

    Tow and Shout Into Your Bluetooth-Connected Smartphone

    Realizing many HD Rams also are used as mobile offices on wheels, the trucks can be optioned out with a wide array of connectivity. Displayed via an 8.4-inch color touch screen, the Uconnect system offers voice-controlled access to music, smartphones, and texting. It has SD-card, USB, and 3.5-mm auxiliary input connectivity, and passengers can make Skype calls and order foot lotion online via the truck’s Wi-Fi hotspot.

    Another interesting feature on the Cummins diesel is a new active-intake airbox designed to minimize power-level drop-off in hot weather. The airbox has two potential intake sources: one from high inside the wheel wells where the diesel is less inclined to suck in lungsful of snow, standing water, and small children; and another more direct intake starting just above the bumper where it’s more likely to find the cooler, denser air it prefers to inhale. A two-way valve in the box referees the air source according to how hot and hard the underhood action gets.

    The HD Rams are available in two-door regular cab, four-door Crew Cab and giant four-door Mega Cab configurations with two bed sizes: 6-foot 4-inch and 8-foot lengths. Look for the trucks in dealerships sometime in late February or early March 2013.

    Over the last five years, Ram not only completely changed its identity, creating entirely new Ram Truck and Ram Commercial brands, but it has revamped its entire half-ton and heavy-duty lineup. Add to that the introduction of a few completely new products like the Ram ProMaster and 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs, and you begin to see why this is the fastest growing pickup truck manufacturer in the U.S.

    Even with all that new product, Ram doesn’t seem to be slowing down when it comes to improving its current HD pickups. Simply put, it is offering so many models, powertrains choices, and technology that it should be making its competition nervous. No one else is coming to offering this kind of support to the HD market. At least not yet.

    We recently had the chance take a closer look at some of the more significant changes for the 2014 Ram HD models at a Los Angeles press event and we found plenty of exciting upgrades and changes for the 2014 model year, with some of the biggest changes centered on the often-ignored three-quarter-ton trucks.

    Before we start, it probably makes sense to quickly note how we got here. Last year, Ram Truck announced at the 2012 State Fair of Texas that it would be upgrading the Ram 3500 front suspension and frames to give it the largest GCWR and towing capacities in the heavy-duty segment. Its one-ton duallys got a much stronger 3-link coil front suspension and 50,000 psi frames--the strongest in the industry. Additionally, the 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engine got a new class-leading 850 lb.-ft of torque and a bulletproof Aisin six-speed transmission. Let’s not forget the class-exclusive three-setting Smart Exhaust brake either. But that was last year.

    If 2013 was the year of the Ram 3500, which we’ll be testing against the 2013 Ford F-450 in our upcoming King of Beasts story, than 2014 looks to be the year of the Ram 2500.

    Changes for Ram 2500

    As noted, the biggest changes to the 2014 Ram HDs are focused on the three-quarter-ton model, the Ram 2500 HD. All 2500s get the new, higher-strength steel frames the 3500 duallys got last year, but now they are offered on all single rear wheel versions. In fact, both a new 3500 single-rear-wheel and select 2500 models can now be optioned with a factory-offered fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailering package. This is especially interesting because all Ram 2500 will have a completely new front and rear suspension setup, eliminating the rear leaf springs in favor of heavy-duty tapered rear coil springs (a segment first). The frontend will get rid of old five-link in favor of the much stronger and more stable (and we’re talking massive lower control arms) new 3-link system.

    If this wasn’t enough of a revolution—no one has ever tried something like this that wasn’t a military vehicle—Ram 2500 will also offer an optional set of rear heavy-duty airbags that allows for load-leveling and driver-controlled, independent adjustments. The big bags will replace the coil springs in the rear and be controlled by a separate air compressor and leveling pressure sensor. An air bag system will be offered on 3500 dually models, but only as a supplemental piece of the maximum tow package, working in tandem with the existing multi-pack leaf springs. The 3500 system will also offer load leveling; pricing has not been finalized for either system.

    More significant news for 2014: the addition of the all-new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8, available for both the 2500 and 3500 models. This new, bigger Hemi shares almost 70 percent of its construction and design with the 5.7L Hemi, but because of the stronger horsepower and torque numbers (410 hp @ 5,600 rpm, and 429 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm) the engine is able to incorporate cylinder-deactivation technology that was only possible in the light-duty applications of the smaller Hemi. Having this feature will be beneficial for those Ram HD drivers that spend much of their truck-driving time with an empty truck or on hilly routes. As if to make the point Ram Truck has a mountain of faith in the durability of this new engine, the 6.4-liter gas engine will get the same five-year, 100,000 mile warranty the 6.7-liter Cummins gets.

    How this bears out remains to be seen but it makes sense since the bigger Hemi is built from most of the same tried-and-true parts from the 5.7L Hemi, taking advantage of that development head start could pay off in fewer engine problems down the road.

    The Cummins motor is not changed for 2014 as the G56 manual transmission continues to be an option for the Ram HDs, but only in the down-rated version, which means it produces 350 hp at 2,800 rpm and 660 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,400 rpm. When mated to the 68RFE six-speed automatic, output jumps to 370 hp at 2,800 rpm and 800 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm. Additionally, no matter the engine and transmission combination, all 2500 models have been upgraded from the 10.5-inch rear axle in 2013 to an 11.5-inch rear axle for 2014. Only the 3500 models will get the high-output Cummins option (385 hp/850 lb.-ft.) that includes the behemoth 11.8-inch rear axle. All Cummins engine-equipped Ram HDs will run 3.42:1 axle gears.

    Our Drive Time

    We had the chance to drive several versions of the new Ram 2500 HD over a wide variety of mountain highways and open road. We even got to do a good bit of towing and a little bit of backcountry off-roading. Every 2500 we drove had four-wheel drive, the new front three-link suspension, and coil springs in back. We heard from several engineers that the stronger frame foundation allowed them to do a better, more precise job of tuning the front and rear springs and we could feel that immediately. The two massive lower control arms keep the front live axle locked to the pavement almost as well as it allows it to quickly absorb and swallow nasty ruts on choppy dirt roads. Steering feel in particular is responsive, yet firm, something we couldn’t always say when driving washboard ruts with the 2013 model. Gone are the hard hits and shakes that we prepared ourselves for when heading toward potholes and deep ruts. The frontend has a heavier feel and the rearend coils did a much better job of quieting most of the axle hop we experienced with other leaf sprung (even the Ram’s) setups.

    Our Big Horn crew cab test unit had the 6.4-liter Hemi and trusted 66RFE six-speed transmission and felt very good on the open rural roads, especially as our route took us up and over the coastal mountains. Some of those canyon roads have a lot of back-to-back twisties and can cause larger transmission to have fits as they try to stay in the right portion of the powerband. For the 6.4 Hemi, the sweet spot seems to be right around 2100 rpm. We found the throttle instantly responsive, with the transmission quick to downshift when we put our foot into it. We’re pretty sure the fact that Ram packaged our Big Horn with 3.73:1 gears didn’t hurt either. During our unscientific fuel economy run, we found our big truck (probably around 7,600 pounds) showing 15.7 mpg on its fuel economy readout. Our route offered a mix of uphill and downhill grades, along with a good portion of freeway driving. Still, we weren’t babying the accelerator.

    Head to Head

    To its credit, Ram provided us with a few competitive vehicles during our test drive, so we got a chance to drive the 2013 Ford F-250 Crew Cab 4x4 with a 6.2-liter V-8, as well as a 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 with its Vortec 6000 (6.0-liter) V-8. We were familiar with each truck, but to have them in a back-to-back drive over the exact same road was revealing. We drove all three over two separate stretches of dirt road, and then moved to a three-mile section of unobstructed paved country road that offered several short hill climbs and valley descents.

    After getting into each truck over the prescribed sections, the Ram was clearly the hands-down winner. Both the front- and rear-ends of the truck felt more solid and controlled, better able to absorb the irregularities of the dirt and pavements.

    The Chevy felt the lightest of the three and as a result had the most trouble keeping the backend of the truck quiet when the dirt road became choppy and rutted. The frontend felt comfortable at slower speeds and during cornering, but it couldn’t keep the rear axle from jumping and wanting to slide from side to side when the chatter hit.

    The Super Duty had a much better frontend feel but seemed in need of a load in the bed. It experienced the worst shudder and shake over the small washboard section of the dirt road at 25 mph. Likewise, on pavement, the Super Duty had the most trouble dealing with the rippled pavement at 50 mph, as it sent the back end into a short seizure that took a second or two to settle out. We know both the Ford and Chevy designs have tapered leaf springs that are designed to offer a softer ride when empty and firmer characteristics as more weight is loaded, but the fine-tuning was not there, especially when unladen.

    The Ram’s coil springs, which narrow at the top and bottom of the coil, as well as have thinner-diameter steel there, did a better job dissipating the inputs after the initial hit, as well as controlling continuous shocks to the wheels. The back end was noticeably superior to the leaf setups, where the frontend, although still taking some jolts, seemed much more solid and quick to eliminate suspension vibrations than its competitors. Our only regret is that we didn’t have 2,000 pounds to load in each and drive the same loops.

    By the end of our quick and dirty comparison test, there is no contesting that coil-spring tuning has advanced beyond the capabilities of the traditional leaf spring. The Ram had the better feel and control over the exact same terrain on similarly equipped trucks, although we’d guess along with the extra frontend weight came some more overall weight, which could have helped the Ram. Maybe that’s why they worked so hard to get the cylinder deactivation into the new 6.4L.

    What About Power Wagon?

    We were told at the event that more information would be forthcoming about the 2014 Power Wagon but Ram did tell us that it would come standard with the 6.4-liter Hemi, which should offer slightly better fuel economy numbers now that it has multi-displacement capability. Additionally, because there’s more torque and horsepower as well, shoppers could also bump down to more fuel-efficient 4.10:1 axle gears as well. Of course, the addition of rear coil springs could make things a little more interesting as well.

    The formula here is pretty simple, and the Power Wagon may be the most obvious example; Ram is trying to throw everything it can at both the light-duty and heavy-duty markets to give its customers (and maybe the competition’s customers who feel a little frustrated) as many choices and options as possible: Coil springs and airbags on the 1500; heavy-duty coil springs and airbags on the 2500; heavy-duty leaf springs and load-leveling airbags on the 3500. All of that doesn’t even mention the new Hemi, new configurations, and better towing technology.

    We like the new 2500 because it looks like the right people have invested in the right technologies to benefit the most truck customers who want to get their work done as efficiently, safely and comfortably as possible. These changes are definitely a step (or two) in the right direction. You can bet we’ll have more when we put together our next three-quarter-ton PickupTrucks.com head-to-head challenge.

  • Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 - Edmunds.com

    The Dodge Ram changed the truck world in 1994 when it showed that full-size pickups could be made to resemble something other than a cinder block. Like its half-ton brother, the heavy-duty 3/4-ton Dodge Ram 2500 boasted a muscular, rugged look that took heavy inspiration from big rigs -- specifically their "shouldered" fender design and prominent grille. This new look clearly resonated with America's truck-buying public, because Ram sales immediately doubled with the new model and would eventually double once again by 1999.

    The most-recent-generation Ram had an even more muscular body and engine lineup, plus a versatile selection of cab styles. In addition to the regular cab, there was a four-door Crew Cab (replacing the long-running Quad Cab) and a Mega Cab that easily lived up to its prefix. Note that although the Dodge Ram technically ceased to be after the 2010 model year, it lives on as the founding member of Chrysler Group's new Ram brand: the Ram 2500.

    Most Recent Dodge Ram 2500The most-recent, fourth-generation Dodge Ram 2500 debuted for 2010. Compared to the previous Ram 2500, the most recent generation got revised styling, a more upscale interior, a retuned suspension and the new Crew Cab, which replaced the previous generation's Quad Cab body style.

    This Dodge Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup was available with two-wheel or four-wheel drive and came in a variety of body styles and trim configurations. A regular cab, Crew Cab (replacing the previous model's Quad Cab) and Mega Cab (really big crew cab) comprised the body styles. The Mega Cab was only available with the short bed, while the regular cab was only equipped with the long bed. The Crew Cab was offered with either.

    Trim levels consisted of the basic ST, the volume-selling SLT and the luxurious Laramie. Higher trim levels offered standard and optional niceties like dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, Bluetooth and a hard-drive-based navigation system. Off-road-ready packages include the TRX and the Quad-Cab-only Power Wagon.

    Standard on all Ram 2500 trucks was a 5.7-liter V8 that made 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. This hefty power plant came with a five-speed automatic transmission. For enhanced towing capability, there was a 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder Cummins turbodiesel that produced 350 horses and 650 lb-ft of torque. It was paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

    In reviews of this Dodge Ram 2500, we found it to be a very capable heavy-duty pickup truck. We are fond of its powerful engine lineup, wide range of body styles and compliant highway ride. We also appreciated the new Crew Cab model, which was an improvement on the relatively cramped Quad Cab from the previous-generation truck. This Ram's interior was a standout among trucks, with a design and materials that were uncommonly praiseworthy.

    Past Dodge Ram 2500 ModelsThe third-generation Ram 2500 debuted for the 2003 model year. The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 was the standard engine from the get-go, although it made slightly less power (345 hp) until a bump for 2009 (355 hp). Transmission choices initially included a five-speed manual, a four-speed automatic and a five-speed automatic. A 305-hp 8.0-liter V10 was optional in 2003 only. Originally, the diesel engine option was a 5.9-liter Cummins, but this was replaced by the updated 6.7-liter Cummins (350 hp, 650 lb-ft) later in 2007. The V8 lost its manual transmission for 2009.

    Only the regular and Quad Cab (a smaller version of the current Crew Cab) body styles were available at the start, with the Mega Cab squeezed into the lineup in 2006. The Mega Cab was only available with the short bed, while the regular cab was only equipped with the long bed; the Quad Cab was offered with either. Model-year 2006 was also when Dodge restyled the heavy-duty Ram's interior, added higher-end convenience features and a cylinder-deactivation feature to the Hemi V8 (power was unaffected), and freshened the front-end styling. The off-road-ready, Quad-Cab-only Power Wagon debuted for the 2005 model year.

    In reviews, we noted that the third-generation Ram 2500 had more power, increased towing capacity, better handling and updated styling compared to the second-generation model. In fact, it's close enough to the current model in terms of all-around abilities that we'd definitely recommend taking a look at used models from this generation -- you're bound to save a bundle, and you'll still be getting an extremely capable truck.

    The previous second-generation Dodge Ram 2500 was produced from 1994-2002. The base engine was a 5.2-liter V8 engine, with an 8.0-liter V10 and 5.9-liter Cummins turbodiesel optional. In 1998, the Quad Cab was introduced with twin rear-hinged doors and larger backseat. The interior was also redesigned that year, including the addition of a standard passenger side airbag with a cutoff switch. In 2000, the Club Cab was eliminated from the Ram 2500, and improvements were made to the steering and suspension. Finally, a high-output Cummins turbodiesel joined the lesser oil-burner in 2001.

    At the time, we commented favorably about the truck's user-friendly cab, competent handling and powerful V10 and diesel engines. One downside was that rear-seat room in the Quad Cab was cramped when compared to the space available in competing trucks.

    The original generation of Dodge's 3/4-ton Ram was actually known as the Ram 250 and was produced from 1981-'93.

  • 2013 Ram 2500 / 3500 HD Pickup First Drive – Review – Car ...

    Half-ton pickups often lead lives of suburban leisure, whereas three-quarter- and one-ton-class trucks are seldom extended the luxury. Often put to work within minutes of taking delivery, big dogs like Ram’s 2500 HD and 3500 HD models are built to flex their muscles on a daily basis and live in a world where a soiled bed is something to be proud of. So when Ram announced that the 2013 3500 HD would be capable of towing a 30,000-pound trailer, we were intrigued but not surprised. The Detroit Three have been drawing lines in the sand for years, turning the practice of one-upping one another’s tow capacities into nearly an annual ritual. With its closest competitor currently at the 23,100-pound mark, it was only a matter of time until someone rounded the number up to an even 30,000.

    The 2500 and the 3500 have been reworked for the 2013 model year, the details of which we got a jump on last September. And although the external cosmetics and interior appointments are nice, it’s the husky 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel powerplants that buyers count on for turning payloads into paydays. These include a 350-hp, 660 lb-ft unit that only comes paired with the six-speed manual; a 370-hp, 800 lb-ft version teamed with the six-speed automatic; and a 3500-only version that produces 385 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of raw power.

    To get our heads around what it feels like to tug 30,000 pounds down the road, we hooked up with Ram at a private location, as most states require a commercial driver’s license for rigs with a gross combined weight rating of 26,000 or more pounds. What we learned is that even though modern technology has largely eliminated fear from the equation, pulling an obnoxiously heavy trailer is still an exercise best executed with equal parts strength and finesse. Ram tells us the recirculating-ball steering gear, the steering knuckles, the ball joints, and the linkages have been redesigned for 2013, but once under way, typical fanboy fixations like steering feel and pedal feedback take a back seat to more urgent concerns such as navigating corners without the trailer’s hopping the curb and stopping the 19-ton express with as little drama as possible. Once you plug your senses into the Ram’s unique tactile feel, or lack thereof, the process becomes almost predictable.

    No banging, clanging, or surging during acceleration or deceleration was experienced, all 30,000 pounds remaining on their best behavior. Sissies with lighter loads like, say, a pallet of anvils or a boat constructed entirely of lead will have nothing to worry about. A new Aisin-sourced six-speed auto with twin dedicated coolers—mated to a Borg Warner transfer case in 4x4 models—makes short work of smoothing out and distributing the mountains of torque. There is a selectable tow mode that modifies shift points slightly, and you can still call out gears manually on the shift lever (the 2500 and the 3500 retain a column-mounted shifter, whereas the Ram 1500 has gone to a dash-mounted shift dial), although Ram engineers say they’ve put in enough time writing the transmission maps that the button is effectively irrelevant. And our experience confirms this.

    The trailer brakes are easily configurable from the helm, and we found a balanced setting in no time. Of course, you can lessen the load on the binders by making full use of the exhaust brake, which Ram claims helps reduce service costs via fewer brake overhauls. For 2013, it includes an automatic mode to help maintain speed when cruise control is set. After using the exhaust brake extensively with and without a trailer, we can’t imagine running a rig this big without it.
