The Cayenne S E-Hybrid joins the identically suffixed Panamera and the 918 Spyder in Porsche’s tax-free triumvirate of congestion charge-busters. In Porsche’s claimed figures, this is a car much greener than the one it supersedes. The old Cayenne Hybrid S gulped 34. 4mpg of petrol while emitting a hot hatch-like 193g/km of CO2. This new S E-Hybrid, which is introduced as the Cayenne range gets a nip’n’tuck, comparatively sips fuel at 83mpg while its 79g/km emissions match a... The E-Hybrid’s battery, additional cooling and voltage lines add 270kg to a comparative Cayenne, snaring it a 2425kg kerb weight. The Cayenne S e-Hybrid is the second of two relatively attainable battery-electric hybrids in the Porsche lineup, joining the Panamera S e-Hybrid four-door coupe. Based on the second-generation Cayenne, which debuted several years ago, the S e-Hybrid is the brand's first hybridized SUV. It joins a lineup that spans from the efficient Cayenne Diesel to the superquick Cayenne Turbo S. Like its sibling, the Volkswagen Touareg, the Cayenne is a capable off-roader, in addition to excelling at on-road driving. The Cayenne is a high-riding sport-utility vehicle, but Porsche engineers have done a brilliant job for nearly a decade of convincing drivers that the SUV is, indeed, a sports car. When the battery is charged, the Cayenne S e-Hybrid starts up as a battery-electric, and whizzes away at double-digit speeds—just like a Toyota Prius and similiar hybrids act.
