BALTIMORE -- John Urschel is widely known for being the smartest player on the Baltimore Ravens . That's what makes his choice in cars even more confounding to his teammates. Urschel proudly drives a used 2013 Nissan Versa at a time when most athletes buy supersized pickups and luxurious sports utility vehicles. "I don't think you understand that I'm living the dream," Urschel said. Urschel's car was his gift to himself when he was drafted by the Ravens in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. He purchased the Versa, which had 30,000 miles on it, for $9,000 (which amounts to 6 percent of his $144,560 signing bonus). Center Jeremy Zuttah jokes with Urschel, saying he understands Urschel's frugality but he believes the tiny car is a hazard. It's surprisingly spacious," Urschel said. "And you know what the best feeling is. You're driving into a parking deck, it's near full and you're on the first level and there is that space that everyone has passed because they said, 'No, we can't park in there. Achieving a position, any position, in the National Football League as a player is a huge accomplishment for any athlete. His contract, if fulfilled, pays a total of $2. 3 million through 2017. Yet Urschel, who has achieved all of that, still shows up to practice in a 2013 Nissan Versa and lives with a roommate to cut expenses. Picked in the fifth round o the NFL Draft last year, Urschel left school to pursue his career in football. That sounds like the typical athlete’s story on its surface, but this player left school with a Master’s Degree in mathematics, which he earned while also teaching integral vector calculus trigonometry (yes, it’s as hard as its name implies). He may be 6-foot 3-inches tall and weigh in excess of 300 pounds and play professional sports, but this football player is no mindless brute. He bought his 2013 Nissan Versa used for $9,000 and says it’s his “dream car” because it’s the right size, frugal on gas, and it’s paid for. Plus, he notes, it parks in spaces that many other vehicles have to skip, giving him an advantage in parking garages and tight lots. CarShare program allows students to rent hourly - Scranton Times-Tribune

Owning a car could be an asset or a hassle for a college student. With campuses pedestrian-oriented, a student can get by without vehicle. To meet the occasional need that can arise for a student who may have a date, an appointment, or event out of town, Enterprise offers its CarShare program at the University of Scranton that allows for hourly car rentals. The University of Scranton tries to provide a range of transportation options to students, said spokesman Stan Zygmunt, including bus passes and shuttles, along with an orientation program to encourage downtown engagement. The program has two Nissan Versa cars parked the Mulberry Street lot, and are available to university faculty, staff and students. Student vehicles in town can often be damaged. Partnering with Nissan, the program has been unveiled on 90 campuses around the country, including East Stroudsburg. Nissan wants to get their vehicles in the minds of young drivers, citing studies that show first-time car buyers are more likely to buy a vehicle they have driven. Enterprise is a pioneer in exploiting the sharing economy, offering a community car sharing in 30 cities in the United States.
