College of Charleston passed over as host for NCAA baseball regional - Charleston Post Courier

The NCAA announced the 16 regional host sites Sunday night and the Cougars did not make the list. The host sites for the regionals were LSU, Illinois, Texas A&M, Miami, Dallas Baptist, Texas Christian, Cal State Fullerton, Florida, Houston, Santa Barbara, UCLA, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Missouri State, Oklahoma State and Florida State. In the end, the Cougars’ two losses to UNC Wilmington in the CAA Tournament proved to be too much overcome to host an NCAA baseball regional for the first time in school history. The Cougars finished the regular season with an RPI ranking of No. 18. The Cougars won the Gainesville Regional last year and advanced to the super regional in Lubbock, Texas, against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders beat the Cougars in back-to-back 1-0 games. “Obviously, we’re disappointed that we didn’t get to host a regional,” said College of Charleston coach Monte Lee. “We felt like we had a good enough resume to be one of the 16 host teams, but the committee felt differently. We would have loved to have hosted a regional and felt like we did enough during the regular season to put ourselves in that conversation. College of Charleston baseball coach Monte Lee knew exactly what kind of player he was getting when the Cougars signed shortstop Champ Rowland out of Spartanburg Methodist junior college. After all, Lee had watched Rowland play as youngster and develop into one of the state’s top defensive shortstops at Wade Hampton High School. With his quick feet, soft hands and Major League throwing arm, Rowland was one of the best defensive shortstops in the state of South Carolina his senior season. At the plate, well, that was a different matter altogether, but that didn’t matter to Lee. “There was one reason we recruited Champ and that was because he could play defense,” Lee said. In high school, in junior college, Champ was always a tremendous defensive player. He quickly established himself as one of the top defensive shortstops in the Colonial Athletic Association, but struggled at the plate, hitting just. “I think a lot of my focus last year was on my defense, it’s something I’ve always prided myself on,” Rowland said. I wanted to hit better, be more productive at the plate, but my priority was being good defensively.
