The End For Elephants? - Earth Island Journal

Koyaso Lekoloi shot his first elephant in anger. During nearly two decades as a poacher, bandit, thief, and alleged murderer Lekoloi killed more elephants than any other individual in northern Kenya until, tired of life on the run, he decided to give up poaching. I met Lekoloi by the side of a dry riverbed just outside Samburu National Reserve in Kenya’s arid, craggy north. “I had a happy childhood,” Lekoloi began, speaking in the local Samburu language. The youngest of eight children born to the last of his father’s six wives, Lekoloi grew up herding livestock, like many young boys in rural Kenya. “I never even went to nursery school,” Lekoloi told me. Lekoloi embodies a contemporary melding of African modernity and tradition. At the same time, his wiry body revealed its familiarity with the land, bending around thorn branches as he walked, his large flat feet sure on the uneven ground, moving always with the pastoralist’s loping gait. His lips were pursed before the absence where his front teeth once were, lending him the impression of a man constantly suppressing a bemused smile, which perhaps he is. CHICAGO — A few days after Rise Against performed at the House of Blues in Chicago in December, Tim McIlrath, lead singer of the punk rock band, was at his hotel in Dallas watching ESPN on a muted TV when his band’s name appeared on the scroll at... Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford had injured his foot at the band’s Chicago show and was expected to be sidelined two to three weeks. “Everybody had these wild ideas that he was crowd surfing or in the mosh pit throwing elbows,” McIlrath said. I realized either the Hawks would go into a tailspin and everyone would blame us or they would find a successor at goalie and Crawford would blame us. Either way, it was a bad scenario. The Blackhawks went 7-1 during Crawford’s absence, but he regained his starting spot. McIlrath avoided the wrath of Crawford and Chicago sports fans, which was a relief because he’s a lifelong Chicago sports fan himself. McIlrath doesn’t get as much attention for his love of Chicago sports as some of the city’s more high-profile fans, including President Obama, Vince Vaughn, Bill Murray, John Cusack, Eddie Vedder, Billy Corgan and Jim Belushi. There is, however, a new generation of famous Chicago sports fans younger than 40, including McIlrath, waiting in the wings. Va. -- More than $9 million will be spent over the course of this weekend in the Ohio valley, as more than 150 teams are staying at local hotels and eating at our restaurants. “It's my first year, but I think it's very competitive and there are a lot of athletes that play at a high level,” said Steven Telleriaas, who is in town from Long Island, N. Y. It's the 27th year for the event and hundreds have converged on the...
