When Mercedes-Benz updated its flagship S-class sedan for 2007, it made the car a technology masterpiece. The 2008 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is a big, fast European sedan, the kind of car that makes you feel you should be bombing through the Alps on urgent business in Switzerland. As we drove the car during our test, we found ourselves glancing in the rear-view mirror, looking for the diplomats, or spies, who we knew belonged in the capacious back seat. On a pleasant cruise down a country road we were surprised to find that what seemed like 45 mph was actually 75 mph, and climbing toward 80. Then there are the electronics, from a lovely navigation display to a stereo system with brain-frying... Yes, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG gets everything, absolutely everything, thrown into it, making it almost perfect. This feature led us to test out how well the car compares with KITT, the car from the television series Knight Rider. And, because the car came equipped with Night View Assist, we put a homonym twist on our test by conducting it at night. The first difference we noticed with the S63 AMG's speech system was that it spoke with a pleasant female voice, rather than KITT's clipped male voice. Our car wasn't as chatty, either, merely advising us on how we could use it to control the stereo, navigation, and Bluetooth telephone system. Source: www.cnet.com

Jake Holmes, Daily News Editor . Usually, getting to drive a six-figure luxury sedan like this 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 is a treat in itself, but I’m starting to think I’ve made a huge mistake. But it seems like my colleague Conner Golden is having a much better time riding in the expansive back seats than I am steering from the front. That’s the thing about the Maybach: If you’re going to drive it, you should save your money and buy a standard Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The S-Class is already an exceptionally good luxury car, with a handsome interior, plush ride, quiet cabin, and a laidback driving demeanor. The Maybach doesn’t build on any of that for the driver, so driving this car is really playing the role of chauffeur. On a normal day, I’d be checking traffic on my phone before getting in the car to figure out the quickest route to work. Senior editor David Zenlea and I have agreed to trade chauffeur duties in the Maybach to get the full experience of its best asset: the back seat. Zenlea soon arrives and, taking his chauffeur responsibilities seriously, opens the rear door for me. I settle into the sumptuous, leather-trimmed right-rear seat -- no, throne -- and raise the power sunshades. I adjust my own personal climate zone to 70 degrees, and the supremely quiet air conditioning gets to work, directing cold air through the rear seat’s numerous air vents. Gorden Wagener has been transforming Mercedes-Benz design since he took the helm as chief designer in mid-2008. His latest creation is the S-class coupe, which embodies what Wagener calls “sensual purity” and “modern luxury. Wagener and his team also penned the new CLA compact sedan, the redesigned C-class sedan, the new GLA crossover and the new GT sports car. Wagener, 46, joined Mercedes-Benz in 1997 as a transportation designer and moved up the ranks. Before joining Mercedes-Benz, he worked at Volkswagen, Mazda and GM. He was interviewed at the S-class coupe’s U. S. introduction in Rhode Island last week by Automotive News staff reporter Diana T. Kurylko. Q: You’ve described the S-class coupe as an evolution of the design philosophy that you brought to Mercedes-Benz. A: The design philosophy is sensual purity which is part of modern luxury -- the design translation of modern luxury. The S-class coupe looks like an exotic supercar. The only single line is the signature dropping line you see on each and every Mercedes. You blend the rear shoulders into the side so this Coke bottle shape has this wonderful stance from the rear that is pronounced with a horizontal graphic and horizontal lines in the rear lights.
