Tinkering with the $100,000 Volkswagen Phaeton has ended careers at VW. Wolfgang Bernhard's decision to pull the car from the U. S. in 2006 because of weak demand contributed to the ouster of the executive, who ran the VW brand at the time and... The internal politics involving the Phaeton stemmed from the fact that the big sedan was a pet project of Ferdinand Piech when he was chairman. VW's engineering-obsessed boss ordered its development to take on the Mercedes-Benz S class, demanding that the Phaeton be able to drive comfortably at speeds as high as 186 mph. While Mercedes sold more than 100,000 S-class cars last year, VW made about 4,000 Phaetons, a drop of 30 percent. But with Piech gone, will there be a new Phaeton at all. The Volkswagen Phaeton flagship luxury sedan (2014 model shown above) is something of an anomaly in the lineup of the habitually-frugal VW marque. It’s built as a $101,000 alternative to the Mercedes-Benz S-class, by the same rather basic German car marque that gave us the Beetle, Golf, and myriad other affordable, practical cars. Nonetheless, since 2002, the Volkswagen Phaeton has been built and sold as an expensive, luxurious sedan from a brand which, as a rule, does not make expensive, luxurious sedans. The car is, in fact, soon to enter its second generation – a release which is now going to be delayed until the folks at VW can figure out how to actually squeeze some profit out of it, according to Bloomberg. To give you just some indication of what a poor sales performer the Volkswagen Phaeton has turned out to be, the automaker stopped selling it in the United States back in 2006, and last year, VW only built about 4,000 units. The 2016 model gets a larger, three-position soft top, remote top operation, a tweaked design, and more package options. The 20-millimeter thick "tritop" folding canvas soft top can be slide back to open an aperture like a targa, or it can be slid all the way back like a proper convertible in just twelve seconds. The top can be opened with a button on the key, and it's available in three colors: blue denim, red, or black. The roof bars come in the color of the safety cell, and the top headliner is always gray. Passion, Prime, and Proxy comprise the three model lines, with two engines and two transmissions on tap. There's a 1. 0-liter, 71 horsepower three-cylinder, or a 0. 9-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 90 hp. Shifting choices are either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed twinamic dual clutch transmission. This model is stiffer than before thanks to more high-strength steel, crossbars underneath the car and the front and rear bulkheads, and a steel "inner tube" in the A-pillar. More safety comes with the available safety systems like Crosswind Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and forward collision warning.
