Connecticut offers EV rebates to jolt sales - Automotive News

Connecticut wants to teach the country how to sell electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. In May, it became the first state to offer cash-on-the-hood rebates for EVs or plug-in hybrids, such as the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt and Ford C-Max Energi. "We're a small state, but we have some big ideas, and maybe we can show California how to do this" by using automaker-style customer rebates, said Jim Fleming, president of the Connecticut Automotive Retailers Association in Hartford. The Connecticut Hydrogen and Electric Automobile Purchase Rebate program has set aside $1 million for rebates from $750 to $3,000 per electrified vehicle, depending on battery size. A small part of the $1 million fund is set aside for dealer cash to motivate salespeople to promote the vehicles. When the CHEAPR program started on May 19, about 3,000 EVs were registered with the state, said a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Through July, 125 EVs and plug-in hybrids have been sold as part of the program. The car, with a battery capacity greater than 18 kilowatt-hours, qualifies for a $3,000 cash rebate. Win-win-win. Through July, about $262,500 in rebates had been claimed, said the association's Fleming. Mercedes Is Saying Goodbye To Tesla - Gas 2.0

Mercedes has been using batteries, motors, and inverters supplied by Tesla for its B-Class Electric model, but now Mercedes is saying goodbye to Tesla for good. According to Germany’s highly regarded Auto Motor und Sport (AMUS), Mercedes says the updated B-Class Electric will have more than 300 miles of range, which is a big step up from its present range of 100 miles using Tesla components. If predicated on the European testing procedure, range in the US would work out to more like 200 miles, but that is still equal to the upcoming Tesla Model 3, which is due in showrooms in 2017. If it is based on the US protocol, that is more than... The current B-Class Electric lists for $42,375, which is about $8,000 more than the Tesla Model 3. But many industry analysts doubt whether the Tesla will really be able to sell the Model 3 for only $35,000. Many expect the car, with popular... Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Cars In Germany: Getting Worse, Actually - Green Car Reports

Germany is one of several countries with aggressive plans to curb transportation-related carbon emissions. Over the past few years, its large domestic car industry has worked to improve fuel efficiency--and even launched several plug-in electric models. But a recent study claims the transportation sector in Germany is the only one that hasn't, in fact, seen a drop in greenhouse-gas emissions in the past 25 years. In fact, the amount of greenhouse-gas emissions from cars and trucks is now higher than it was in 1990, according to Deutsche Welle (via Autoblog ). The study--conducted by Germany's Federal Environment Agency--found the transportation sector... However, that improvement hasn't translated into reductions in carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which are proportional to the amount of fuel consumed. Germany buyers apparently favor SUVs and larger cars, while sales of smaller, more fuel-efficient greener models remain relatively low. "We've noticed that many technical improvements and the trend toward more fuel-efficient vehicles have made little difference," Federal Environmental Agency President Maria Krautzberger is reported as saying.
