It's hard to talk about the 2014 Lexus GX 460 without drawing comparisons between it and its stablemate, the LX 570. The large, block-shaped SUVs appear similar in pictures, so its easy to assume that Lexus is overlapping itself. However, the GX 460 Luxury model that I tested feels like a better fit for the road. If you're looking to spend significant time off-road, it may be beneficial to look upmarket to the LX, but for the vast majority of luxury SUV drivers who occasionally need to haul or tow things and only need light, trail off-road capability, the... 6-liter V-8 engine Under the hood is Lexus' 4. 6-liter V-8 engine -- a workhorse, but not necessarily an impressive engine. As a result, the EPA estimated 15 city mpg, 20 highway mpg, and 17 combined mpg isn't much to brag about. I finished my week-long and highway-heavy testing cycle at an average of 16. 8 mpg, so at the very least Lexus' estimates are fairly spot on with what you can expect in the real world. Fuel goes in, power comes out, and the 2014 GX 460 outputs a stated 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, which again isn't as impressive as it sounds when you consider that BMW and Acura state similar outputs with. The Lexus GX460 is what we would have to classify as a luxury 4 wheel drive that will be a comfortable taking the boss to on a golf outing as it would be taking a group of scouts on a week long camp out in the high Uinta mountains. This vehicle is all class and has all the amenities that we would expect to come with any Lexus and then they have taken the GX to the extreme in 4x4 capabilities. The GX460 is not what most would consider a crossover vehicle. It sports a V8 engine that puts out just over 300 horsepower at 306 hp and 326 pound-feet of torque, not the strongest V8 on the market but adequate for the smaller size of the GX. It will however tow up to 6500 pounds when needed so the weekend... The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System that comes with each 460, worked exactly as advertised by automatically fixing the front and rear stabilizer bars in place when on-road helping to minimize body lean while cornering, and off-road it allows... For 2014,... This new grille has been hit or miss depending on what car it is placed on, and the GX catches the rough side of that scale. Instead of looking sporty or exciting, I think the Lexus GX looks a bit more like the Predator as he screams at Arnold Schwarzenegger. Once you move away from the schnoz, the rest of the Lexus is handsome in that classic-SUV way. It has large sides that feature imposing cuts and creases around the fenders, there are large running boards integrated into the side and there are nice chrome-trimmed roof rails across the top. The rear of the GX 460 is also interesting, but more in how it operates than how it looks. If you just need quick access to things, a small button near the rear windows allows just the glass to swing upward and open, similar to more classic SUVs from the 90s.
