2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland EcoDiesel Long-Term Update 4 - Truck Trend Network

We regularly saw a range of 500-plus miles and often towed 6,000-plus-pound loads with confidence. Service intervals came about every 10,000 miles, and the DEF tank was properly sized to mostly match our regular service stops, although we did fall about 500 miles short of our second service, necessitating a truck stop fill-up on the way home... Our only unscheduled stop was for a check engine light, which led to a warranty replacement of our catalytic converter, a common issue with early EcoDiesel-equipped Jeeps and Rams. Otherwise the Grand Cherokee proved to be very reliable with no other issues during its stay. Where the Grand excelled was in long-distance driving comfort, great all-weather capability, and towing—sometimes all on the same trip. Thanks to full-time four-wheel drive and an advanced Selec-Terrain traction control system, the Grand Cherokee is sure-footed in any weather. Being Jeep's first-generation air suspension, the system has some great features, such as self-leveling for load, an aero mode for highway speeds, and the ability to rise up over obstacles when wheeling. Oshkosh Will Replace Army's Humvees After Winning $30B Contract - International Business Times

Oshkosh Defense won a major initial contract from the U. S. Army on Tuesday to build a new fleet of armored vehicles that will soon replace the Humvee, the Washington Post reported. Under the contract, which could eventually be worth up to $30 billion, Oshkosh is set to build roughly 50,000 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the Army and about 5,500 for the Marine Corps through 2040. The initial contract including its options... Oshkosh is ranked as the 99th-largest U. S. government contractor as of fiscal 2014 while Lockheed was ranked as No. 1, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “Oshkosh has been building tactical vehicles for the Department of Defense for 90 years, so no other company understands the role that tactical vehicles play in our troops’ lives better than Oshkosh,” said Charles Szews, the company’s chief...   Ram Pickups and Chassis Cabs

  

  Ram 1500 is set for a minor update in 2015 or early 2016 (model year 2016), with a major update in 2017 or 2018 (model year 2018-19). The refresh is expected to be fenders-forward (except a new tailgate) and interior, with aerodynamic changes.

  oh20 also wrote, “Dodge is currently working on a plan that would make the Ram 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs available to all Ram dealers.”

  

  Our predictions (including those of oh2o) came true — there is a 6.4 Hemi option for the Ram heavy duty trucks, along with a new six-speed Aisin transmission to compete with the GM’s Allisons.

  The Long Hauler concept used a Kelderman air suspension in front and rear, for higher capacity with a smoother ride; that model was based on the Ram 5500, which has a leaf-spring rear suspension. Here’s the full Long Hauler story and status update (as part of a January 2014 interview). We no longer expect to see it.

  

  Commercial heavy-duty trucks (e.g. tractors, class 7-8) might be planned, though they could be Ivecos, and aren't expected until 2019 at the earliest. In 2013, then-head-of-Ram Fred Diaz said that these were discussed, but leaders decided that they did not know the market well enough, and decided to wait and reconsider it later. “Later” is likely to be much later, as in “after 2020.”

  We should see minor updates to the chassis cabs and heavy duty pickups for model year 2017, with major updates in 2019, and a minor rebranding of some models to the “Ram Professional” line.

  Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, Wagoneer

  

  The Wagoneer, a luxury seven-seater positioned above the Grand Cherokee (Durango is currently $2,000 more at the base level), is still planned for the time when a minivan-based crossover joins the Dodge lineup, replacing the Caravan; the Durango name may be used on the crossover instead of Caravan. It’s possible now that the Caravan name will go to the base Chrysler minivan with Durango replacing Journey when Journey goes to rear wheel drive.

  One correspondent reported: “Grand Wagoneer looks just like the classic Wagoneer with a bit of Durango styling.” Wagoneer has been all but confirmed, and should have a longer body, like Durango, but with the Jeep suspension setup rather than Durango’s on-road-biased system. Either Wagoneer or a vehicle above it is expected to hit six figures in its ultimate form.

  A supercharged “Hellcat” V8 may join the Grand Cherokee lineup for model-year 2017, with a first-for-the-engine all wheel drive.

  A redesigned Grand Cherokee may be delayed from its 2017 due date to switch underpinnings from the original plan, which would have kept much of the current design, created jointly with Mercedes.

  Rumors are now flying over whether Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, and Durango will continue on their own platform, or switch to a new setup jointly developed with Alfa Romeo.

  Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Scrambler / Gladiator

  Scrambler pickup is a “no-go” until at least 2018, with the redesigned 2017 Wrangler. Jeep Wrangler • Scrambler pickup • Jeep Off-Road Campers • How they would build a Wrangler pickup

  

  A US diesel is being looked at; one would expect a four-cylinder VM diesel similar to those used in European Wranglers for decades now, but a 2.4 liter Fiat diesel might make the cut. An updated transfer case may appear, possibly bringing back a full-time setting for broader market appeal. Sheet metal changes will improve aerodynamics (strong chance of major windshield and front end redesign). There is a chance of some sort of “stripped” model as the production line can now apply bedliner to tubs during assembly. Better quality is also expected. We have extensive discussions linked from our 2018 Jeep Wrangler page. 

  CUSW, C-EVO, D crossovers Jeep Patriot

  Jeep Patriot continues, but the basic body form appears to have been replaced by Jeep Renegade. We do not expect Patriot to last past 2016.

  Jeep Compass

  redriderbob, historically a good source, wrote: “Jeep engineers are working closely with Fiat engineers on this project. We will more likely see a diesel version of the replacement Compass/Patriot here in the US and Canada. They are also making sure this new Jeep is more capable then the ones it replaces.”

  

  We now believe it will look like a Fiat 500X with a Grand Cherokee/Compass front clip. Most likely, they are going to stick with the current “mini Grand Cherokee” look (below) to differentiate it from Renegade.

  We believe it will be 2.4-powered in the United States; internationally, it will likely have the full panoply of Fiat engines, including the Multijet diesels, e.TorQ for South America, and 1.4/1.4 Turbo for the rest of the world. The nine speed automatic is likely with the same front wheel drive and all wheel drive setups as the Renegade.

  

  To keep costs down and volume high, the 2017 Jeep Compass is likely to be built in the United States in the same factory as the forthcoming Chrysler 100 small sedan. If the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X sell well enough, the same plant can also make Renegades, though that is almost certainly unnecessary. Compass will probably be made in Brazil and China as well, for regional markets.

  There is a slight possibility that they will make the Compass on the new rear wheel drive setup mentioned earlier.

  Jeep Cherokee XJ replacement

  A Cherokee-sized vehicle based on the new midsized rear wheel drive platform, with more extensive off-road capability, it possible though unlikely for the long term. This would augment or replace the current Cherokee and would be a relatively low-production vehicle produced with other D-RWD based vehicles. We would not expect this until 2019 if at all.

  Ram vans (commercial vans)

  A version of Iveco Daily now looks as though it’s far away if it will ever arrive; it is not on the plan through 2018. There are no stated refreshes of the ProMaster or ProMaster City, which are both recent.

  

  Stowing seats for trucks and SUVs

  Engineer Steven St. Laurent noted a new patent filed by Chrysler, covering an extension of stowable seats. The “Stow ’n’ Go” system in Chrysler and Dodge minivans allows owners to easily fold the middle and rear seats into the floor, providing a completely flat surface for moving large objects (or lots of small ones); when not in use, owners can use the under-floor space for added storage.

  Like related Chrysler stowable-seat patents of 2014, this one focuses on simplicity of construction and usage.

  Instead, using fewer parts, the new seats can apparently be folded forward and down into the floor. In addition, they provide unobstructed space between the bottom of the seat and the floor, for other passengers’ feet and whatnot. (The patent actually provides for more than one arrangement using pivotable couplings.)

  Mr. St. Laurent wrote,

  Chrysler is seeking to have rear and middle seats in new-generation trucks and SUVs fold completely into the floors — a flat surface vs a 5-10° incline when folding middle or rear seats (e.g. in Durango).  It is now simpler to drop the seat and align it to the floor tub, without much effort. The seat back will be the surface of the floor. It would interest anyone who uses the interior space of the truck or SUV for storage. [It could also be helpful for using] the rear of the quad-cab Ram truck for sleeping when driving on long trips, by folding the seat and placing a mat on top when switching drivers. In an SUV, flat rear space for cargo is better what I am seeing in any SUV.

  The inventors were Michigan residents Walter Holzhueter and Todd McCann.

  Probably dead until after 2020: mid-sized pickups

  The Gladiator concept truck was driven on-stage at a 2010 dealer meeting, with an indication that something like it might be made. Sergio Marchionne later said it would probably be a Wrangler-based vehicle with a short bed. A Mopar pickup kit followed, then a September 2011 statement that a Jeep pickup is still a few years out. It now appears to be slated for 2019.

  Two new pickups have been rumored but neither appears to be on the way. One is a Ram 50-sized compact powered by the Tiger Shark four cylinder, due for Mexican production so they can sell it all over North and South America without duties — both the South American and North American free trade zones include Mexico. This appears to have been replaced by a bigger Fiat Strada pickup (sold as Ram 700 in Mexico) and a Mitsubishi pickup, neither of which are likely to appear in the US.

  

  The Dodge Dakota replacement, which we first mentioned in 2007, which morphed into a European-oriented, metric-ton pickup, has been dropped, most likely partly due to increased competition from both Ford and GM.

  We are still providing some renderings based on earlier plans. Suzq044 has provided two renderings showing possible design directions, along with the one above from JackRatchett. JackRatchett was basing his off statements that a minivan-based truck would be made at Windsor; this now appears to be unlikely, though it’s still possible that the forthcoming pickup will come from the new minivan platform.

  

  The rendering above shows a truck made on its own platform; the one below, a modification of the Dodge Charger to provide an El Camino/Ranchero/Rampage style pickup/car.

  2014 was another momentous model year for Chrysler, with refits, new engines, new cars and vans, and two anniversaries (30 years of minivans and 100 years of Dodge) to celebrate with special editions.

  

  Dodge Challenger

  Now optional on every 2014 Challenger is a performance-tuned suspension and brake system with 20-inch aluminum wheels. R/T Blacktop includes the Super Track Pak and blacked-out appearance, and R/T Classic now gets Nappa leather and suede seats.

  

  The following special editions have a 3.06:1 or 3.07:1 axle ratio with 215mm rear axle, 300 horsepower V6 (except on R/T which is still V8), paddle shifters, and wider performance tires.

  The Sinister Sport Group has glossy black wheels with a performance suspension and brakes, and sport mode. The Super Sport Group has chrome-clad wheels with P245/45R20 all-season performance tires, die-cast paddle shifters, sport mode, performance steering, brakes, and suspension, and a rear body-color spoiler. R/T Redline adds two-color red and gray stripes from behind the front wheel arches to the tail with a body-color grille surround, and 20-inch black chrome wheels with a Redline Red lip and inner backbone.

  

  Challenger colors include Header Orange, Redline 3 Coat, Plum Crazy, and TorRed, along with new Ivory Tri-coat and Phantom Black Tri-coat Pearl. The car is in its final year in its current form; insiders have told us that the next-generation Challenger will retain much of the current model’s looks, with some changes to the front and rear clip, but will be able to use the eight-speed automatic already in Charger and 300 V6 cars, as well as numerous fancy electronic systems in Dart and Cherokee.

  On SRT Challenger, Launch Control system is new for 2014. SRT Challenger Core continues as a lower-priced way to get SRT power. SXT Plus and higher have optional HID headlamps.

  Prepare for a new Challenger in model-year 2015...

  Dodge Dart rejiggering: better base, free 2.4

  Dodge Dart has more standard features, including the 184-horsepower 2.4 engine standard on Dart SXT, Limited, and GT, while the $15,995 Dart SE keeps the 2.0 and Aero keeps the 1.4. There are no optional engines on any model.

  The Dart SE was upgraded with more standard features, and a Convenience Group to bring it roughly to old-SXT status. Dart SXT ($18,495) has the racetrack tail lamps, underbody aero kit, voice control, filtered air conditioning, and other conveniences. Rallye is an SXT package, with a touring suspension, black 17-inch wheels and grille, dual exhaust, fog lamps, striped cloth seats, audio controls on the steering wheel, and Rallye badge. (The touring suspension includes a rear stabilizer bar in both Rallye and GT).

  

  Dart Aero starts at $19,995 and includes most of the options of Limited, with the Fiat turbo engine and top gas mileage of 41 mpg highway. Dart Limited, at $22,995, adds the 2.4, a standard automatic, racetrack tail lamps, keyless entry/start, Nappa leather seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, power sunroof, 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, dual-zone automatic temperature control, remote start, 10-way power driver seat, reconfigurable gauges, backup camera, LED interior lighting, garage door opener, heated power mirrors with lamps, fog lamps, and more. Limited buyers can also get the Technology Group, which includes blind-spot monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, rear park assist system, HID headlamps, rain-sensitive wipers, and an ultrasonic intrusion alarm.

  Dart GT starts at $20,995, below Limited; it is an SXT with the sport suspension and steering, keyless entry/start, 18-inch wheels, dual exhaust, blackened look, fog lamps, heated mirrors with lamps, perforated Nappa leather seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, 8.4-inch touchscreen stereo, remote CD player, reconfigurable gauges, backup camera, dual-zone automatic temperature control, and remote start (with automatic).

  Dodge Charger and Charger Pursuit

  The new Charger Redline has unique 20-inch black chrome aluminum wheels with a red painted lip and inner backbone, Beats Audio, and a V-6 engine with sport mode, cold-air induction, and sport-tuned exhaust raising output from 292 to 300 horsepower. New colors include Header Orange, TorRed, and Plum Crazy.

  

  Charger Pursuit is now available with all wheel drive option (V8 only). Other changes to prevent defections to new Chevy or Ford police cars include:

  Larger 14.5-inch high-performance brake system Secure Park, which prevents idling cars from being driven without the key fob in the car A revised rear fascia and more robust exhaust tips to prevent damage when crossing highway medians New camber link change to the rear suspension for better high-speed and aggressive braking performance Upgraded fuel pump for added durability Variable-displacement air conditioner compressor for added efficiency Factory-installed vinyl graphics for customer convenience Rear park assist now available Minivan 30th anniversary editions

  

  The 2014 Chrysler Town & Country 30th Anniversary Edition includes black Alcantara seat inserts with Nappa seat bolsters, glossy black steering wheel bezels and interior trim, third-row power folding seats, power folding mirrors, light gray lower instrument panel, Super Center Console, and logos in the gauge cluster, radio splash screen, and key fob.

  

  Standard on these cars is the Driver’s Convenience Group, with heated first- and second-row seating, a heated steering wheel, adjustable pedals, keyless entry/starter, and bright door handles.

  The Town & Country S has revised trim with a monotone black interior with leather-and-cloth seats and glossy black appliqués and a standard dual-screen Blu-Ray system with HDMI input, two USB recharging ports, a 12- volt outlet and a 115v two-prong outlet. The screens are higher-definition than in past years. The van has a performance suspension.

  

  The 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan 30th Anniversary Edition is available on both the SE and SXT. It adds unique 17-inch polished satin carbon aluminum wheels, body-color heated mirrors, and 30th Anniversary badging on the front fenders.

  

  Inside, it has silver accent stitching and glossy black accents, black cloth seats, a black leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, black headliner and overhead console, chrome trim bezels, and anniversary logos in the gauge cluster and key fob. The SXT version adds bright chrome window trim moldings and roof rack, fog lamps, automatic headlamps, Black Torino Leatherette seats with suede inserts and silver accent stitching, and a 10-way power driver’s seat.

  

  The biggest value in minivans may be the 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan American Value Package, at $19,995 plus destination. It has the usual V6 and six-speed automatic, with air conditioning, anti-lock four-wheel disc brakes, stability control, seven airbags, third-row Stow ’n Go seats, power windows, locks, and mirrors, tilt-and- telescoping steering column, cruise, and more. New for 2014 on AVP are easy-clean floor mats with the optional second-row Stow ’n Go seats.

  New for the 2014 Grand Caravan R/T are automatic headlamps with black bezels and the Security Group, along with new black wheels.

  2014 Jeep Wrangler special editions

  The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X is new for 2014, with a winch-capable bumper, wider rock rails, and higher level of standard content. It starts with the Rubicon model (for both two and four door Wranglers), and adds BF Goodrich KM 255/75R17 tires on 17-inch Rubicon wheels, painted satin black with polished faces, and a red Jeep Wrangler “icon” logo on the inside pocket. The X uses black steel off-road bumpers, with removable front caps (to increase clearance) and a winch-capable design. A dual-intake Power Dome hood aids engine cooling.

  Red tow hooks are installed in front and rear, and Mopar rock rails give added protection from trail damage (there is also a black fuel filler door). Red-silhouette “Rubicon” decals are on both sides of the hood. The Wrangler Rubicon X comes with a Premium Sunrider soft top and is available with a black three-piece Freedom hard top or body-color hard top. Black leather seats, heated in front, are standard, along with an X-styled gauge cluster, Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), Mopar slush mats, and unique axle locker and sway-bar disconnect switches.

  

  The Jeep Wrangler Freedom III is the Sport S with graphics and a built in $250 donation to the United Service Organizations (USO). Jeep Wrangler Freedom III has sparkle silver 17-inch wheels, gray grille and bumper inserts, body-color wheel arches, star-in-circle fender badges and hood decals, rock rails, black tail lamp guards, special fuel fill door, and Sunrider soft top with tinted rear window. Inside, it has black fabric seats with silver embroidered logos, silver accent stitching on the steering wheel and accents, grab handles, and slush mats; the grab handles are new for 2014 Wrangler. New paints include Amp’d, Anvil, Copperhead, Flame Red, Granite Crystal and Hydro Blue (Freedom III only). Billet Silver, Bright White, Black and Dune continue on for 2014.

  

  In Europe, the new Jeep Wrangler Polar was launched, in a new blue color along with silver metallic, bright white, and the new blue. The "Polar" badge shows the 78° S and 106° E coordinates of Vostok, Antarctica, where the severest temperature in the world was recorded at -89.2° C (-128.56° F). Based on Sahara, it has many unique styling elements including new Ceramic White accents. The Polar uses the Dana 30 front axle and Dana 44 rear axle, with a standard Command-Trac NV241 part-time, two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio and Trac-Lok anti-spin rear differential. This replaces the manual rear-axle locker and is a torque-sensitive mechanical unit that works to maintain traction when travelling on slippery or rough road surfaces, such as on sand, gravel, snow or ice.

  

  The Polar Pack 1 special package has front side air bags, UConnectTM with navigation system on a 6.5-inch touchscreen, 40-gigabyte hard disk, USB compatibility, AUX port and DVD player.

  The 2.8-liter common rail diesel delivers 200 hp (147 kW) of power at 3,600 rpm and 460 Nm of torque at 1,600 - 2,600 rpm when paired to the five-speed automatic transmission. On models with a six-speed manual gearbox, it delivers 200 hp and 410 Nm of torque at 2,600 - 3,200 rpm. The gasoline V-6, available in selected markets, delivers 284 hp (209 kW) and 347 Nm of torque and is paired to the five-speed automatic transmission only. 

  Cars with minor changes Chrysler 200 has a short 2014 model year, with production stopping early in the year; Sterling Heights will then prepare for the June 2014 (or so) launch of the 2015 Chrysler 200. Dodge Avenger is likely getting a short 2014 as well. We thought the car and name would be dropped until 2016, when a new rear wheel drive car would replace it (née Dodge Barracuda). New for 2014, Blacktop and Rallye are available on the Avenger SE model, with the 2.4-liter I-4 engine, for only $595. Maserati Levante (based on Grand Cherokee) should start production in Italy. Dodge Journey/Fiat Freemont continue with minor changes: Crew is renamed to Limited, new option packages (particularly American Value Package) cut prices, satellite radio is optional across the line, and some options are available on lower models than in 2013. New colors for 2014 include Black Clear Coat, Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat, and Redline Red 2 Pearl Coat. Viper continues with the base model getting a $2,000 price hike but including, standard, what used to cost most buyers $4,500: the Grand Touring package and 12-speaker stereo setup.   The 2014 Jeep Cherokee debuted with a new 3.2 liter V6 and 2.4 Tiger Shark four, and, in Europe, a diesel. It has front-drive and 4x4 setups, and a nine-speed ZF automatic.

  The 2014 Grand Cherokee has a refreshed interior and exterior, and all engines have the eight-speed automatic. There are both 5 inch and 8.4 inch touch-screen stereos, and a VM 3.0 diesel in North America. Dodge Durango had similar upgrades, except the diesel.

  Ram ProMaster was based on Fiat Ducato, but with a new interior and modifications to the body and suspension, with Ram engineers given the go-ahead to change whatever they needed to; the results expanded development time to three years but provided a van with much higher capacity, durability, and user friendliness.

  

  For 2014, the Ram 1500 has optional stop/start technology, and buyers can get eight-speed automatics with the V6, diesel V6, and Hemi, along with a tough, lightweight ZF axle. A plug-in hybrid was developed (but not sold) in case of higher gas prices. (See the 2014 Ram 1500 page and the 2014 Ram HD (2500/3500) page).

  A 6.4 Hemi option arrives for the Ram heavy duty trucks, along with a new Aisin transmission to compete with the GM’s Allisons. Heavy duty Ram pickups get an optional air suspension setup, more rugged than the one in the Grand Cherokee; Ram 2500 gets a link/coil rear suspension, Ram 3500 continues with leaf springs, and both get new front suspensions. The Long Hauler, based on the Ram 5500, may join the lineup in 2014 (as a 2015 model) at last.

  Viper continues, and for 2014, a new Competition Coupe is released based on tuning done at tracks around the world.

  

  The 2015 ProMaster City is expected to arrive, built in either Toluca, Mexico or Fiat’s joint venture in Turkey; this small, front wheel drive van is expected to replace the Ram Cargo Van, providing better fuel efficiency and a lower price ina vehicle designed to be a commercial van from the start. It’s essentially a re-badged Doblo, though if it’s made in Mexico, one may assume that it’s been re-engineered as well, despite prior plans to the contrary.

  2015 Jeepster

  A B-segment (subcompact) entry-level Jeep, coded BU and believed to be called Jeepster, is in development, built on a modified SUSW platform similar in size and basic architecture to Fiat 500L. This is also expected to appear in calendar-year 2014 as a model-year-2015 vehicle.

  

  The 2009 announcement that Jeep would sell a subcompact (B sized) SUV made by Fiat raised hackles among the Jeep community. IndianAutosBlog’s Shrawan Raja told us that the vehicle, coded “BU” but often called “B-Jeep,” is being created primarily by Chrysler’s new engineering center in Chennai, India, on a unique platform. The delay would be explained if the original plan was to use a lightly modified Fiat, but Jeep successfully argued for increased uniqueness. The car shows up on Chrysler’s North America plan; it will be built by Fiat and imported.

  

  Jeep Compass and Patriot

  For their final model year, 2014, oh2o said (correctly) that Jeep Compass and Patriot would get a six speed Hyundai automatic and a high-performance Magna all wheel drive system. The combination has been used for three years on Hyundai and Kia SUVs, and replaced the JATCO CVT. The new AWD system responds more quickly than the CVT-based one (which continues on Trail Rated models).

  The 2014 Compass also gets a tailgate refresh. Both have an early 2014 model year; Patriot ends a few months before Compass.

  

  Launching in 2014 as a 2015 model, the new Compass expands on the mini-Grand Cherokee look and feel. Like Cherokee, the Compass is built on the same basic platform as Dodge Dart, but with more ground clearance. We believe it will have a choice of two Chrysler four cylinders, coupled with a nine speed ZF automatic at the high end and the six speed Hyundai at the low end.

  It is expected to have a similar Alfa Romeo model to replace the Fiat Sedici (Suzuki SX4).

  Alfa Romeo and Maserati are only covered here where they come from American sources, such as Guila, Kamal, and Spider.

  Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli are said to be based on the next-generation Chrysler large cars. There’s also the Maserati Levante version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, with a powerful engine from Fiat's premium group, coded W2 and built in Italy to satisfy the brand-snobs.

  Alfa Romeo will still be busy, working on a rear wheel drive sports car leading the brand’s North American re-introduction; the Alfa 4C will bring a splash and help the reputation of later, more pedestrian Alfas. Don’t expect any 2014 Alfas in the United States, though; the brand will most likely enter with the 2015 model year, sporting a moderately complete lineup.

  The rumor mill is still up and running about the Jeep Gladiator. This time we hope they are right! There is a slight chance that we will see the New Jeep truck return as a 2014 model. The economy has picked up and Chrysler is doing much better than it was just a few years ago. While the odds are low of this truck making it to product this year, Hopefully with the increase demand Jeep will pull the trigger and push the Gladiator to production.

  

  Expect the 2014 Gladiator to borrow heavily from the Jeep parts bin. While it is rumored that the Gladiator will get a diesel engine, we have yet to see many automakers take the leap into smaller displacement ones. We predict the Gladiator will get the trusty Pentastar 3.6L V6 and ride on a stretched Wrangler chassis. This has also been some whispers of the it possibly getting a diesel motor.

  As time passes the odds are looking better for this truck hitting the market. If it doesn’t make it as a 2014 model, then 2015 might be the year. We will keep you up to date with any news we hear!

  "Pretty soon." That's the answer Jeep president Mike Manley gave to Australian site Car Advice when asked about a decision on a Jeep pickup truck. And with the next-generartion Wrangler planned for arrival in 2015 or 2016, this is the window for getting with planners. There's certainly plenty of lust for a Jeep pickup – just look at the strong sales of Mopar's JK8 kit.

  Concerning a factory-fresh production version, part of the considerations are whether to build a two-door, or a four-door that could provide more space for people and cargo but wouldn't have the Wrangler's same off-road might. Making a Wrangler variant that can't live up to the stalwart Jeep's off-road standards is a concern for Manley. The approach and departure angles of a four-door wouldn't be a problem, but the length of a pickup would mean "your break-over angle gets destroyed," said Manley, and in that case he wonders, "Then is it really a Wrangler?" The two-door, however, would have "no issue at all."

  Another idea would be to build a Jeep pickup on a Fiat platform, perhaps the one underpinning the next Liberty. That could be a model distinct from the Wrangler line and, while still possessing the off-road promise of a Jeep. Manley only spoke of that hypotetically, though, saying he could "see the opportunity in the future" for such a vehicle. It shouldn't be long before we know one way or another.
