Jeep hit, killed black bear on I-75 in Collier - The News-Press

A 59-year-old Maryland man was driving a 2010 Jeep Liberty west on I-75 when a black bear heading south on the north grass shoulder crossed the paved shoulder into the Jeep's path about 2:50 p. m. , according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. Chrysler exploding gas tank "remedy" not enough for some - CBS News

About a year and a half ago, Chrysler recalled 1. 5 million vehicles over a gas tank issue, but there are still concerns the solution may not go far enough and complaints the company isn't moving fast enough to make the vehicles safer. If another vehicle crashes into the back, the fuel tank can rupture, resulting in a deadly fire. Government figures put the death toll from deadly fires in the jeeps upwards of 50 people, but safety advocates say that figure is much higher, reports CBS News correspondent Jeff Pegues. Check here to find out Kayla White, 23, was eight months pregnant with her first child, a boy she'd already named Braden, when her 2003 Jeep Liberty was struck from behind on a Michigan highway. After the crash, the plastic gas tank of her Jeep melted away and witnesses said there was an explosion when the SUV was rear-ended. "These vehicles need to get off the road and you see them every day and they're oblivious to it. They think, 'We're driving a safe vehicle,' and you're not. NEWS EDITOR GREG MIGLIORE: The Jeep Liberty Renegade was a nice weekend traveler for me, and I enjoyed motoring around town in this off-roader. The Liberty has been toughened up a bit in appearance compared with the last generation, and it looks more like a rugged Jeep than its predecessor. My biggest complaint is that the black plastic trim and bumpers looked cheap, and some of the black silhouetting on the side didn't present that well. I like the idea, I just didn't think it looked sharp. It seemed like the 210 horses could use a bit of a boost. Otherwise, I really did like my time in this Jeep. People like Jeeps. COPY EDITOR CYNTHIA L. OROSCO-WRIGHT: I could definitely see Jeep peeps and off-road enthusiasts enjoying this Liberty Renegade. Even though this Jeep has some nice touches and mostly nice sheetmetal, it still has an off-road vibe. But if that was the goal with the plastic trim around the wheel wells and the bumpers, I'd have to say Jeep missed the mark. I saw a similar Liberty in a driveway on my block during my ride home, and sans the black-plastic cladding, the Jeep looked much better. On the road, you feel the weight at the wheel, and it feels as if the Liberty could use a kick in the pants (more horses) to get it moving more quickly off the line and in passing.
