Jaguar's XJS and XK sports coupes always had the advantage of bodywork that draws neck-twisting stares. But for those who subscribed to the "It's better to look good than to feel good" philosophy, Jaguar provided a fashionable costume, stellar substance notwithstanding. With the arrival of the 2007 XKR, the old saws about Jaguar coupes should come to an end. Consider that the 420-hp XKR's peers are the 355-hp Porsche 911 Carrera S and the 500-hp BMW M6, and the achievement that is the latest supercharged XKR comes vividly into perspective. Unlike the last XKR, which could trace its roots back to the mid-'70s XJ-S, this latest iteration isn't hamstrung with the baggage of the past. Despite optional 20-inch wheels ($5000), with almost no sidewalls to protect them, and firmer springs than the naturally aspirated XK8's (38 percent stiffer up front and 24 percent stiffer in the rear), the XKR still manages to offer a more... Back when some of the more senior Motor Trend staffers started in this business, the running gag was, if you wanted a Jaguar coupe, you'd better buy two-one to drive while the other was in the shop being fixed. Quality was not Job One at Jaguar, as Ford exec Bill Hayden declared not long after Ford took over the British maker in 1989: "Apart from some Russian factories in Gorky, Jaguar's were the worst I'd seen. In 14 months of Jaguar "ownership" (we had a naturally aspirated XK coupe for six months and the supercharged XKR for eight months), we had an air-temperature sensor replaced under warranty, spent $5 on a new battery for the key fob, and replaced... The only time either car was in the shop was for the XKR's first complimentary service at 10,000 miles. In addition to the air-temperature sensor failure, the airbag-warning light flashed a few times on the red XK at 4858 miles, and an engine-warning light came on once in the titanium gray XKR at 2283 miles. " That was Jaguar design chief Ian Callum's advice when he found out we were getting a $75,500 XK. Unfortunately, the Ferrari -like hue wasn't readily available, so we settled for Radiance, a softer, darker-metallic red, combined with caramel... "Oh, that I have lived to own this car," gushed one of CNET's more effusive readers in response to our first take of the 2007 Jaguar XK Coupe. Flared rear haunches, a short snout, and an arcing hood that goes on forever combine to give the XK a character of brawny elegance. Under the hood, an all-aluminum 300-horspeower naturally aspirated V-8 engine enables the Big Cat to purr along in the fast lane, while Jaguar's eCATS electronic suspension gives it impeccable road manners on the twistiest of roads. Inside, the 2007 XK combines classic comfort with updated cabin tech, with burled walnut and soft-grain leather surrounding an as-standard touch-screen navigation system. The XK's standard audio system fails to live up to the car's high-end refinements--or its price tag. Our tester came with the leather-and-wood Luxury Package ($3,300) and the Advanced Technology Package ($2,500), comprising adaptive cruise control and adaptive front headlights. With a base price of $74,835 and a $665 handling fee, our 2007 XK purred off the lot for $81,300. The 2007 Jaguar XK is a two-seat sports car in four-seater clothing.
