This weeks car capers include assaults on batteries, sunshine states, recycled bike racks, diluted diesel, sitting uncomfortably and many more that Telegraph Cars could not publish. Dim, son I have a 2003 Jaguar XJ8 with 70k miles and in mint condition. I love it and don't want to sell because it's got years left in it. My problem is that the battery keeps going flat. Try switching it off completely (so it does not come on when you open the door) and see if that isolates the dimmer switch as the cause. (Could also be the boot light or the glovebox light not going out when the lids are closed, or the car not being properly locked. I had to get the fan coolant unit replaced and was told this was a common problem, but unusual for such low mileage. The car was vibrating at idle when using the a/c. Also replaced have been brushings, a CV joint boot and mention was made of front and rear struts that may need attention. Would you replace or accept that these problems are the norm for this car. It's now a 10-year old car and Florida suffers high humidity. Radiator fans usually fail because the coolant sensor/sender switch screwed into the water jacket of the block fails. I hope they are not talking about a chain driven power transfer system. Particularly like the weight reduction – 190kg is a fair weight loss. The lazy blanking plate in the rear passenger window that allows the window to be shorter so that it can be wound down is most un-Jaguar. What’s happened to Jaguar. The XE looked like a com-gen car with all the other compact execs thrown in to a computer, and what came out is an average of the others. Then for the XF they said OK Computer come out with something for the next size up, so it spat out a car which was the same, but sized up 7%. Then they thought “oh no, it looks just the same as the XE. I know lets put in an extra side window so... And Golfschwein that glasshouse looks to me closest to the UK built mid 90’s Honda Accord aka Ascot Innova. On a US website it says the weight reduction is 132lbs for the petrol V6’s (no diesels for them) and 265lbs for the AWD version. Maybe the weight reduction is more for the 4cyl Ingenium engined cars over the old Ford ones. In diesel form they are no more powerful than the old ones, which was 147kW. We’ll end up with Mondeo matching power. You might quibble about some aspects of the XJ’s styling, but at least it has some design. Source: www.caradvice.com.au
