Before his induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and subsequent retirement in 1999, he had rearranged the noses of many a poor rider, with a signature headbutt move unlike any other rodeo bull in history. One guy was so terrified of big Bodacious, that he wore a full-face hockey mask in an attempt to stay on him for for the full eight seconds. Well, you’ve probably heard references to rodeo in car reviews before, and I’ve used them on occasion, but the first time I drove Jag’s 364kW supercharged V8 F-Type, with the traction control switched off, I was reminded of this famous bovine... That car’s combination of instant torque spurts, a relatively short wheelbase, and a lively diff set-up resulted in another signature move – this one involving the back wheels trying to overtake the front. Not that I want to draw direct comparisons between a frankly dangerous animal and a sportscar, but in the wrong hands the F-Type, even in its least powerful V6 trim, could rearrange a roadside hedge or two. So, you can imagine my surprise when Jag announced an even more powerful 5-litre supercharged V8 model with 405kW and an R badge to match. Sometimes power wars can get out of hand in high-performance cars, and though this output doesn’t rank all too highly in the greater scheme of supercars, it’s certainly a handful in this particular chassis with drive to rear wheels only. But even if you look at the top of the range and the seemingly comparable 550hp R AWD Coupe its £91,660 starting price is nearly £30K less than a 520hp 911 Turbo. That tempting overlap in the two ranges just isn't there, no matter how hard you look. Because, seemingly, an F-Type is ideally placed to act as the slightly rough around the edges alternative to the ever predictable Porsche. Both have the feel of the kind of car you always promised yourself when the hard work paid off, both tick all the emotional boxes of social respectability with a degree of 'still got it' virility and both can do the daily driver and Sundays and... Even in dry conditions a Coupe R’s rear 295-section tyres stand little hope in the face of 404kW and 680Nm. And in... With that, the Coupe R AWD was born. At 1730kg and $242,670, it’s 80kg heavier and $15,700 more expensive than its two-wheel drive brother. Visually the bonnet has a deeper central (and perhaps unfortunately-named) “power bulge” while the bonnet vents are unique to the all-claw kitty. But the biggest differences are to be found driving. And the first thing we noticed, or were reminded, is just how fast the Coupe R is. By god. Like the rear-driver, the noise is as anti-social as ever, a bordering-on-comedic flatulent V8 racket. The F-Type Coupe R AWD is, at the very least, entertaining no matter the speed. Its default drivetrain setting is rear-drive, meaning up to 50 per cent power can be sent forward.
