Movie cars frequently represent the great dichotomy of modern cinema: what you see on the screen is truly awesome, but chances are good the closest it ever came to reality was the moment the first 3D computer model was transposed to film. With some notable exceptions, very few of the “cars” we see in movies, especially the spectacular ones, are actually drivable machines. The cars used in the most recent Mad Max , for example, were all actual vehicles, painstakingly constructed for their roles. Apparently, Need for Speed also used only real cars for their action sequences, necessitating the construction of dummy units for crashes and the like. Movie cars, clearly, are becoming more tangible by the production. Good news, then, as now I can write a short list of such cars that, if I could, I would drive over any other:. This is here because it is, simply, the most bad-ass on-screen car I can think of. Fast. Although clearly just “nigh,” since it met a sad fate in the second film — so sad, in fact, that I still shake my head whenever I watch that movie. He is 46, drinks too much coffee, and wakes up at 6 wherever he is, even on days he doesn’t need to pack lunches and get the kids into the Honda Odyssey. “The pre-show now is, like, a couple whiskies and a couple Advils,” he said with grinning derision one day in May. At one point during an interview in the cafe of the Park Hyatt, to make a point about the power of music to connect, he expounded upon the lyrical beauty of the quintessentially cheesy ’70s pop hit “Escape (the Piña Colada Song),” which he learned... “Then, the third verse they decide to meet — so they meet, and it’s his wife. “He’s like, ‘I had no idea you liked piña coladas and getting caught in the rain,’ and then they fall back in love. “Actually listened to the music,” he said with satisfaction. Tesla Motors delivers 'ludicrous speed upgrade' for Model S P85D - ExtremeTech

In a press conference today, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced one that’s sure to get the attention of current and future Model S P85D owners — a “ludicrous speed upgrade” (thanks, Mel Brooks) that drops the 0-60 time 10 percent to a scant 2.... The upgrade is significant: It boosts the front electric motor from 221 to 259 hp and the rear from 470 to an astounding 503 hp. Musk said the new mode delivers 1. 1Gs during acceleration and called it “faster than falling,” which we’d rather not... The Ludicrous Speed Upgrade, like the Model S itself, doesn’t come cheap at $10,000. Current Model S P85D owners can upgrade for $5,000 for the next six months. Musk says a similar upgrade will also be available for the upcoming Model X crossover, albeit with somewhat less punch thanks to that model’s higher weight. Aside from Ludicrous mode, Musk also added an upgraded 90kWh battery back option for $3,000 and introduced a 70 KWh rear-wheel drive Model S at $70,000.
