New car sales increased 3. 2 per cent annually in July taking registrations so far in 2015 up 6. 5 per cent to surpass the 1. 5 million mark. In the 41st consecutive month of increases, 178,420 cars were registered last month, according to the latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Howard Archer, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, said: 'It is unrealistic to expect car sales to keep churning out strong year-on-year growth rates as they are now coming from a high base. 'The economic fundamentals still look largely healthy for the motor industry which will hopefully allow car sales to remain at an elevated level over the coming months. The top-selling motors so far this year have been supermini, small family cars and dual purpose cars, namely SUVs and crossovers. In particular, demand for superminis has grown 22. 7 per cent since 2005. The SMMT says it is a result of motorists downsizing to smaller cars that offer significantly improved refinement, comfort and specification than their equivalents a decade...
