All of that heavy metal just reflects a slightly depressing reality for us car lovers: SUVs, crossovers and other trumped-up trucklets continue to sell faster than cars. If I owned one, I might get a personal plate with “BOX” on it and no one would know where I ended and the vehicle began. At least Honda deserves credit, I suppose, for bringing a little flair and a different shape to its latest cute-ute, the 2016 HR-V crossover. Based on the tiny Fit hatchback, the HR-V gains 9 inches in length to provide more space inside. Both made the HR-V seem more real than the midget Fit. The HR-V also looks better, shining with uncharacteristic styling for a Honda — part tall, swoopy sedan, part station wagon and part dinky SUV. Far better dressed than the utilitarian Fit, the black HR-V I had recently bristled with bold lines and curves. Head-turning quotient: The HR-V, regardless of trim level, looks perfectly at home on any church or school parking lot. Body style/layout: The new HR-V is not a shrunken CR-V, nor is it an enlarged Fit. It fits everything most of us want and need in an urban vehicle, available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. There are three trim levels: LX, EX and EX-L. The rear-most seats fold floor-flat for bulk packages, the passenger-side front seat goes down to accommodate a load length of eight feet, and other interior arrangements easily are made to handle a vertical stack height of four feet. Pet note: The HR-V is dog-friendly. Safety: Standard equipment includes ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes, four-wheel anti-lock brake protection, emergency braking assistance, traction and stability control, tire-pressure monitoring, and side and head air bags. Pricing: Base prices for the 2016 HR-V range from $19,115 for the front-wheel-drive HR-V LX to $25,840 for the EX-L Navi with all-wheel drive.
