General Motors announced today that it will begin taking orders for new bi-fuel compressed natural gas (CNG) versions of its ¾-ton Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. The trucks have a large compressed natural gas tank in the bed that looks like a large toolbox. 0-liter V8 engine can be switched from running on CNG to gasoline and back via a switch on the dashboard. The CNG Sierra and Silverado will be only be available in extended-cab 2500 HD form, with either a long or short bed and two- or four-wheel drive. Compared with gasoline, CNG typically produces much cleaner emissions while providing similar fuel economy, performance, and driveability. Its relative energy cost can be much less than gasoline when using a convenient home-fueling station. On the other hand, CNG vehicles have traditionally been priced thousands of dollars higher than a similar gasoline-powered version, public refueling stations are relatively rare, and CNG is not available at all—even for home fueling—in some areas. Pricing for the CNG Sierra and Silverado has not yet been set, but customers will be able to order the CNG package starting April. Source: www.consumerreports.org

General Motors says the heavy-duty versions of its new-generation full-size pickups go on sale first quarter of next year as 2015 models. Those account for about 25% of all Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra sales. Chevrolet and GMC showed the heavy-duty pickups today at the State Fair of Texas. Usually powered by diesel engines, heavy-duty pickups have a broad array of buyers. They range from those who need simple work trucks with more capability than standard-duty -- half-ton -- pickups, to people who tow horse or race car trailers all over the U. S. They want something powerful enough to shrug off nine or 10 tons out... GM gave no prices, but heavy-duty pickups start at about $30,000 for pure work models and can run to $70,000 or more for luxury versions. Source: www.usatoday.com

The Sierra HDs start with a sturdy foundation - a fully-boxed ladder frame with an independent front suspension and asymmetrical leaf springs holding on a solid axle out back. As one would expect, the 2500HD and 3500HD are differentiated mainly in terms of capability, with the latter being stronger and offering the option of a foaur-rear-wheel "dually" setup. Both offer standard and long beds - measuring 6. 57- and 8. 17-feet, respectively - along with a choice of Regular Cab (two doors, single row of seating), Double Cab (four doors, two rows) and Crew Cab (four doors, more space for rear passengers). The two models also share a powertrain range, which starts off with a gasoline 6. 0-liter V8 that produces 360 horsepower (322 in the 3500HD) and 380 lb-ft of torque. for the 3500HD.
