Let’s start with the F-150’s “bigger brothers,” Ford’s F-Series Super Duty. As it stands right now, the OEM expects to build its five millionth Super Duty unit – a line encompassing the F-250 up thru the F-550 – after 15 years of production at its Kentucky Truck Plant next month. It’s also interesting to note the beefier capability of those Super Duty trucks since their introduction in 1999. Back then, for example, Ford said the largest gasoline engine in the original Super Duty – the Triton 6. 8-liter V10 – produced 275... Today, by contrast, the Super Duty 6. 2-liter gasoline-fired V8 option delivers 385 hp and 405 lbs. Back in 1999, for example, F-350 Super Duty pickup featured a maximum tow capacity rating of 14,600 lbs. But today, the 2015 model F-450 Super Duty pickup leads the way with a standard tow rating of 31,200 lbs. Take, for instance, the OEM’s 2015 Ford Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle concept, or Transit PTV, which features what’s known as a “prisoner conveyance. Source: fleetowner.com

2016 Ford F-150 Pro Trailer Backup Assist - Truck Trend Network

We’ve seen it a hundred times: A novice trailer tower gets into a situation where he or she needs to back up the truck with a trailer attached. Ford, having heard the desperate cries from novice truck owners everywhere, has developed a new technology where backing a trailer no longer has to be an intimidating part of truck ownership. Thanks to the latest advancement in truck technology, Ford’s new trailer backing assistant is on the way to make backing a trailer as easy as pulling one. Marketed as Pro Trailer Backup Assist and launching on the 2016 Ford F-150 in all trim levels as part of the trailer tow package (save for the XL, where it can be had a la carte), Ford’s latest technology will allow anyone the ability to safely... Utilizing the backup camera, electric steering, and some other sensors, Pro Trailer Backup Assist adds a sole control knob above the trailer brake controller to interior of the truck. The system has the ability to keep a trailer backing up straight, despite bumpy or crowned surfaces, and will steer the truck, based on the driver’s inputs to the knob. Source: www.trucktrend.com

Louisville Plant Gets Ready for Aluminum Ford Super Duty - The Fast Lane

Ford looks to be making progress on the next generation Super Duty, although many details have been a close-guarded secret. Ford announced that $80 million are being invested into the Louisville plant for additional space for parts storage, new paint shop, and replacing other equipment. Ford will likely need to invest even more to get the old welding equipment out and bring in the new machines that bond and rivet aluminum parts together. It’s not clear if the Louisville location will see a growth in workforce, or what the increase will be. The next Super Duty will use a high-strength steel frame. Ford has not released any specifications for the next Super Duty, but it’s possible for the big truck to lose over 700 lbs. On the flip side, it will likely increase the purchase price (the base price of the new F-150 went up about $400). The body repair costs will likely be higher as well.
