  • Will Truck Owners Fall for Ford F-150's New Aluminum Body ...

Will the new 2015 Ford F-150 truck unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show persuade truck buyers that aluminum is "Built Ford Tough" and better than steel?

While some drivers may not care what comprises the inner body of their vehicles, car manufacturers like Ford are carefully crafting a story that will convince Superman himself of the benefits of aluminum in crashes and for heavy loads.

Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book, said significant advancements have been made in the construction of aluminum alloy over the past several years.

"They don't call Superman 'the man of aluminum,' but they also don't call him 'the man of carbon fiber,' another light weight and strong material," Gutierrez said. "Perhaps Superman needs to evolve as technology advancements allow for lighter and stronger materials."

    2014 Detroit Auto Show

The Surprising 'Winner' of the Detroit Auto Show

The new F-150 truck introduced on Monday has a series of 11 new bells and whistles, most notably an 8-inch productivity LCD screen and an aluminum alloy body and bed, which cuts 500 to 700 lbs from the top-selling truck.

"While at the end of the day, steel may be more durable overall, the use of aluminum in the engine block and other parts of the frame have allowed Ford to save weight while maintaining the existing ruggedness, towing capacity, and performance stats of the existing truck," Gutierrez said.

Ford says there is still steel in the frame, which it calls "all-new" with "more high-strength steel than ever." The company says that its new "military-grade, aluminum alloys" used in Hummers and Bradleys improve "dent and ding resistance," in addition to saving weight.

Gutierrez says only time will tell if aluminum will prove to be as durable as steel in the long run, but Ford appears confident that their new trucks will deliver based on the upgrades.

"Overall, up to 700 pounds of weight have been saved, helping the F-150 tow more, haul more, accelerate quicker and stop shorter, and contributing to efficiency," Ford says in a statement about the new truck.

On sale later this year, the truck will be available in five primary "trims": XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch.

Jonny Lieberman, Motor Trend senior features editor, said the truck is just a sign of more aluminum things to come.

In Photos: Who's the 'Winner' of the Detroit Auto Show?

With higher Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards coming, regulated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it's no longer logical to use steel for car bodies, Lieberman said.

"BMW is tackling this problem with their i line by building cars out of carbon fiber," he said, adding that Jaguar and Audi, among other manufacturers, have long employed aluminum as a lightweight alternative to steel.

Ford's chief operating officer Mark Fields acknowledged that working with aluminum was more expensive than steel.

"But given the volume we are working with, we will find some efficiencies," Fields said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Brian Johnson of Barclays Capital estimates Ford earns about $11,000 on a pickup truck sale compared to $5,000 for a car, the Los Angeles Times reported, and the F-Series trucks comprises nearly half of Ford's North American profits.

  • New aluminum-body Ford F-150 is 700 pounds lighter - CBS News

You will still see those tough guy truck ads during NFL games, but Ford (F) is trying to convince buyers that high-gas mileage pickups can still be manly. With its redesigned F-150 being introduced Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Ford is moving to an all-aluminum body that drops 700 pounds in weight and boosts gas mileage.

CBS This Morning Ford CEO Mulally on redesigned F-150 truck

For the first time, the new Ford F-150 is featuring an all-aluminum body. Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally talks to the "CBS This Morning" co-...

Not only is the F-150 part of the perennial best-selling vehicle line in America, it is a major contributor to Ford's corporate profits. "This is a critical redesign, not just for Ford but for the entire full-size truck market as we enter an era of rapidly-increasing fuel efficiency standards," says senior analyst Karl Brauer of Kelley Blue Book. "Ford needs to establish the F-150 as a future-friendly model that will keep pace with government regulations while still meeting the demands of serious truck buyers."

Ford has not yet announced EPA ratings for the new pickup but has suggested that it might approach 30 MPG in its highway rating, which would top competitors. As for the serious truck buyers, Ford will be pitching to them that the new F-150 can carry more and tow more than its predecessor. The company said the new design had been tested for more than 10 million miles, including customers who cooperated in using the pickup in construction, mining and electric utility work. And the new truck successfully completed the grueling Baja 1,000 off-road race.

In addition  Ford kept in mind the business owners who need to work from their pickup. "More than ever before, customers want a truck that is a dependable partner, mobile office and a go-anywhere workshop," says Raj Nair, Ford group vice president for global product development. For this customer, the new F-150 will offer features such as a laptop storage compartment.

Here are some of the other features of the 2015 F-150:

New engine lineup: The lighter weight lets Ford add some slightly smaller, higher-MPG engines. The base engine is a new 3.5-liter V-6, down from 3.7-liter in the previous model. The 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6 Ecoboost, which has been a popular option, will be continued along with the 5-liter V-8. Cargo convenience: New integrated ramps up to the bed will make it easier to load ATVs, motorcycles and lawn mowers. A combination of metal brackets and cleats in the cargo box will help tie down items back there. Remote locking and unlocking of the tailgate with the key fob will cut down on trips to the rear of the truck. Safety features: The new F-150  will add some advanced safety features such as so-called Lane Keeping, which warns the driver if he is drifting out of his intended lane. Adaptive cruise control keeps the truck a certain distance from the vehicle ahead in highway driving. And a feature called Curve Control increases four-wheel braking if the truck is headed into a curve too fast.

The new 2015 F-150 with the aluminum body atop a high-strength but lightweight steel frame will go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year.

  • Best new tech: Ford F-150 aluminum body and box structure ...

The Ford F-150. Switching from steel to aluminum body in the high-production Ford F-150 was a bold and risky move for Ford that establishes a new benchmark for the future.zoom

Winner: Ford F-150 aluminum body and box structure

Given all the hype surrounding its introduction, it's no surprise that the entire body and box structure of Ford's new F-150 pickup are constructed of aluminum.

There have been aluminum vehicles before — primarily on relatively low volume sports cars and luxury sedans — but never something of the magnitude and with all the operational challenges of the F-150. It's that scope that makes this accomplishment so special.

The F-150 is a vehicle that built its reputation on toughness. So it has to deliver. Plus, it's the bestselling vehicle in North America, with annual production approaching one million units. Manufacturing techniques had to be developed to support that rate of production. There is far more to changing from conventional steel construction to aluminum than just changing the material.

Every component had to be redesigned to account for the different properties of aluminum, and new methods of doing simple things like fastening the parts together had to be developed.

There's a lot of adhesive bonding in the F-150's body. The payoff is reduced weight: the new F-150 is more than 300 kg lighter than its predecessor. Less weight means proportionately less fuel consumption, and that's the big driver for taking such extreme measures. But lower weight also pays other benefits, such as better braking from the same-sized brakes. And better performance from the same-sized engine — or the ability to reduce engine size, output and fuel consumption.

    BMW I3 composite

SECOND PLACE: BMW i3 composite body structure

While it is available with an optional gasoline engine to help extend its range, BMW's i3 is designed to be an electric vehicle. As such, it must be light in weight both to offset the added weight of its battery pack and to ensure adequate driving performance, including driving range.

BMW attacked that problem by minimizing weight in every aspect of the i3's design, including its body structure. Breaking with current norms for passenger cars, the passenger cell is not built as a unit with the chassis but as a separate structure.

In principle, it's similar to the body-on-frame construction that characterized car design through much of the last century, but in detail it is quite different.

The core structure of that passenger cell is made of lightweight, high-strength carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) — the same as Formula One race cars. About a dozen large plastic body panels attached to that structure give the car its form. Unlike race cars, which can be built individually over an extended period, the i3 is designed for mass production, which necessitated the development of unique materials and processes for its composite structure. Differing further from the separate body and frame structures of the past, which were mechanically joined with rubber-isolated body mounts, the i3's aluminum chassis and composite body units are bonded together with a proprietary adhesive.

Once cured, they become a rigidly unitized structure that cannot be separated. The net result is a complete car with a mass of just 1,297 kg — in the same range as that of a Mini.

    Acura RLX Hybrid

    Pawel Dwulit

    Acura RLX Hybrid

THIRD PLACE: Acura Sport Hybrid SH-AWD

The acronym SH-AWD is well known to Acura aficionados. It stands for Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and it's been an Acura trademark for several years.

While the moniker may sound grandiose, it is apt, for it has proven to be an effective tool for sharpening a vehicle's handling prowess. It does so by adjusting the torque distribution laterally between each rear wheel, using a very sophisticated differential design.

Applying more torque to the outside wheel and less to the inside wheel in a turn helps pivot the car into a corner, reducing the tendency to understeer.

The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system is a further development of that concept that takes advantage of the added control capabilities offered by a hybrid powertrain.

In the RLX hybrid, a gasoline engine and an electric motor combine to drive the front wheels. But at the rear, the car employs an electric motor for each wheel to achieve all-wheel drive.

There's no conventional driveshaft connecting the front and rear systems and the rear units each work independently, with no mechanical connection between them.

That unique ability to independently control the rear wheels permits either positive or negative torque to be applied to an individual wheel. When rounding a curve, the positive torque is applied to the outer wheel while the drag on the inner wheel helps the car rotate through the corner.

Best of all, the whole operation is seamless and undetectable to the driver.
