Details are out regarding the all-new 2012 Ford Ranger, and the design looks poised to step right in below the F-150 in Ford's lineup. But, sadly to longtime Ranger enthusiasts (and there certainly are some), it's not coming to the U.S.. Here's why, in

Ford's Epic Gamble: The inside story - Fortune

The Baja 1,000 is considered one of the world’s most grueling off-road races, and the engineers at Ford figured the 2013 running was just what they needed to shake down their new, aluminum F-series pickup truck. Ford assembled a small army of 63 people, including two doctors and two EMTs. Fearing that competitors would get an advance peek at the design of the 2015-model truck, they built a new truck with aluminum body panels that looked exactly like an old one. Last year’s race loop was one of the toughest in years, taking contestants over 882 miles of rocky desert tracks, dicey mountain passes, and the occasional paved road around Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Of some 300 entrants, nearly half failed to finish—among them several specially built race trucks. After the race the truck was driven back to Dearborn, Mich. That’s a lot of effort to put in for a lowly pickup, a vehicle that spends most of its days on construction sites and farms and lacks the sex appeal of a Mustang or even a Fusion. While a lot of attention has focused on outgoing CEO Alan Mulally’s One Ford plan to unify the global manufacturer, the automaker’s profits largely depend on a beefy truck that is sold only in North America and will never find a market in Asia or... Not that it needs to. The F-series has outsold every other car and truck in the U. S. for more than three decades, a record of longevity that ranks in the hierarchy of superbrands like Coke and Marlboro. Source: fortune.com

2015 Ford F-150: Competitors Can't Hold a Magnet to the Latest F-series - Car and Driver

The importance of the new-for-2015 Ford F-150 pickup probably doesn’t need to be highlighted—but we like to write, so here’s a refresher: For the past 30-odd years, the F-150 has been the bestselling vehicle in the U. S. , period. To you, this means you’ll see a lot of F-150s every day, old and new, doesn’t matter, you will see one—or 150. To Ford, having the F-150 is akin to having an obscure, rich uncle die every single year, leaving behind a pile of cash. It’s a constant—pretending for a moment that the Ford Motor Company has an endless annual supply of faceless, loaded, and doomed extended family members—there to add icing atop the balance sheet in good years and help prop up the company in the... With the F-150’s relatively comfortable sales dominance in both the pickup segment and the passenger-vehicle market overall, it would be understandable—smart, even—for Ford to simply nip the truck here and tuck it there and call the result “new. For such a stoically American vehicle format, the pickup truck rarely invokes the word “revolutionary,” but we think Ford’s new workhorse might just have earned such consideration. Built Ford Tough, Audi Light. Ford looked at the truck’s layout and found that while steel is certainly useful in the frame, it’s not really that pertinent in. Source: www.caranddriver.com

Ford Confirms US Compact Pickup, Hints Redesigned Ranger - autoevolution

After several months of rumors about Ford looking to develop a new compact pickup for the US market, the Blue Oval company has confirmed that Dearbon has room in its lineup for a smaller that F-150 truck. Speaking at a meeting with industry analysts and a handful of journalists, Ford’s truck program marketing manager Doug Scott said the automaker is planning a redesigned “true compact truck” that will be “clearly differentiated from the F-150 in... According to earlier speculations, Ford’s future compact truck could have a payload capacity of around 1,000 pounds and a towing capacity of about 3,000 pounds. The North-American Ford Ranger was retired in 2012 after it has grown to be too big and too expensive for a compact pickup truck market that has shrunk considerably last year. The only way Ford will succeed with a Ranger replacement is if it is designed better than a Toyota Tacoma, and if they can replicate the hype around Tacomas. Ford killed the Ranger off because no one was buying them, the truck was the same from 1996-2012 except for a few styling changes, and the 4. 0L motor was underpowered for its size and just wasted gas. Ford should focus its efforts on the F-150 with more engines choices and mate them to 6 speed transmissions or even 8 speed transmissions that Dodge has in their new Ram 1500.
