The 2017 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor made its first public appearance today in Detroit, practically dripping with off-road menace and attitude. Not only does the 2017 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor look beastly, but it promises to be an even more monstrous off-road machine with more power, more torque, less weight, and as always -- no nonsense. Like the 2015 Ford F-150 , the next-gen Ford F-150 SVT Raptor starts with an aluminum body and a tough high-strength steel frame. Looks aside, the lifeblood of the 2017 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is an all-new 3. 5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 engine, which Ford truck communications manager Mike Levine promises will be even more powerful than the old 6. 2-liter V-8. “411 hp and... The regular 3. 5-liter EcoBoost engine in the standard F-150 (it's also used in several other Ford models) churns out 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, but the Raptor’s version will ratchet up performance courtesy of a new block and upgraded turbos. Despite being one of the worst on-road performers we’ve ever tested at C/D, Ford’s earth-pummeling F-150 SVT Raptor is one of the coolest vehicles extant. A Special Vehicle Team doodle turned market darling, Ford has embraced the truck’s surprising popularity, cranking up production and adding useful new features each model year. Although the updates for 2013 are largely cosmetic—we’ve previously run full road tests of the 2010 5. 4-liter and 2010 6. 2-liter —we took that as an excuse to play once again with one of our favorite four-wheeled machines. The Raptor debuted for 2010 as a SuperCab model with a 310-hp, 5. 4-liter V-8, but it has since adopted a 411-horse, 6. 2-liter eight-pot and offers a choice of a full-four-door SuperCrew version. For 2013, new 17-inch forged aluminum wheels have been added, and they feature a patented bead-lock system for keeping the 35-inch-tall tires on the rims at very low pressures. The full MyFord Touch suite (here with redundant knobs) is now available inside, for better or worse, and HID headlights have been added to the $4760 Luxury package (power and heated and cooled front seats, adjustable pedals, dual-zone climate... While the trucks were prototypes made from a mix of 2015 and 2017 Raptor components, Ford says the testing proved that the new off-road-ready truck will be able to handle hard use. Over that distance, the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor prototypes averaged an impressive 50 mph, hitting as much as 100 mph in wide-open stretches and crawling at as little as 10 mph when the going got tougher. Ford claims its test is "far exceeding" what the average Raptor owner would do to their trucks, to which we suspect many future owners will reply, "challenge accepted. " The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor, introduced in January at the Detroit auto show, has aluminum bodywork to help it shed weight compared to the last Raptor. Source: www.automobilemag.com
