Catching up with the staff of the Barb - SFGate

“The Berkeley police arrested and handcuffed me on Telegraph one afternoon when they spotted me taping a poster for the San Francisco Mime Troupe to a utility pole. Before I was locked up I was given one phone call. I dialed the Barb. Max (Scherr) paid my bail. ” “The day before our March for Women’s Liberation, I handed Max Scherr a call to action, bearing my “Gumbo” byline. Max headlined my piece, “Why the Women Are Revolting. ” Berkeley Barb in hand, I stomped toward the rear of the office, muttering to myself but loud enough for all to hear,“Max Scherr, you are a two-faced sexist pig. ” I saw Max’s bald head bent over a sheet of layout paper. Don’t bother me,” and dismissed me with a wave of his hand. Years worked at the Barb: 1966-69. now: Editor of a labor magazine Favorite memory: “‘Seven Days in May,’ when Berkeley was occupied by the National Guard under the direction of Gov. Reporters were tear-gassed and clubbed, but nobody was arrested, and the stories were all insightful and dramatic. We put out the best issue of the paper ever, the May 23-29, 1969, issue, of the Berkeley Barb. Connection to the Barb: Started reading it when she was 13 and later studied it to write her master’s thesis. Source: www.sfgate.com

1973 Ford Courier - McBride's Ride - Four Wheeler Magazine

When we first saw this ’73 Ford Courier in the California desert we had a rush of emotions, including awe and a strange case of envy. We’re used to seeing old iron rigs on the trail, but who in their right mind wheels a vintage Ford Courier. For those of you not old enough to remember, the Courier was a Mazda-built pickup truck that was available in the US from 1972 to 1982. It had design cues meant to mimic the Ford F-Series of the time and it came standard with a four-cylinder engine. Interestingly, our research indicates that the Courier wasn’t available in a four-wheel-drive version during its lifetime, though there were some aftermarket companies doing a limited number of conversions. McBride’s Courier is not one of those aftermarket conversions. It’s mostly an amalgamation of Ford Courier and Toyota pickup. What we have here is a Courier body grafted onto a Toyota chassis with a significant number of modifications thrown in the mix. After many hours spent wrenching, McBride got the truck running and since then it has been over the Rubicon Trail, as well as to Johnson Valley and the Prairie City ORV Park. So, how does this unique Courier handle the trail. McBride’s Courier is a one-of-a-kind, unusual rig, but make no mistake, it’s more than a conversation piece. Source: www.fourwheeler.com

'God is in charge': Tony Powers remains gracious to the people coming to see ... - Hutchinson News

The sign in the window of Tony Powers’ office says open for business. But Tony Powers is not there. Instead, the longtime Hutchinson optometrist, owner of Emerson-Carey Vineyard and Winery and registered beekeeper, is living his final days in Hospice House, where staff make him as comfortable as possible while a steady flow of friends pass... Two years ago, if anyone had asked Tony, 61, how his battle with cancer was going, he’d have laughed at the thought of being in Hospice House because he was pretty sure he was going to beat the disease. “It’s a trip we all have to go on,” Powers said. Even so, he continues to welcome a revolving door of visitors, some to reminisce about the fun times they had together. Powers even took time to reflect on his life, which began on a farm 25 miles east of Dodge City. After graduating from Bucklin High School he was selling life insurance door-to-door in western Kansas. It was on a return trip to Dodge City to sit with his grandfather who was dying of cancer that his life took a different path. While visiting his uncle, Laverne Powers, long-time Hutchinson optometrist, Tony was offered a loan to go to optometry school. The plan was for Powers to move to Hutchinson once he graduated.
