• 2014 Ford F-150 Review - Motor Trend

  The 2014 Ford F-150 is a versatile full-size pickup that can be configured in a number of ways. With models ranging from the workaday XL to the luxurious Limited trim to the off-road special SVT Raptor, the F-150 lineup has a little something for everybody.

  The 2014 F-150 range includes the following trim levels: XL, STX, XLT, FX2 and FX4, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, Tremor, and SVT Raptor. Powering the F-150 lineup are four engines. The base engine is the 3.7-liter V-6, which produces 302 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. Above that are two V-8 engines, including a 5.0-liter unit making 360 hp and 380 lb-ft, and a 6.2-liter producing 411 hp and 434 lb-ft. The twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 rounds out the F-150's engine offerings, producing 365 hp and 420 lb-ft. All engines come paired to a six-speed automatic transmission with a shifter-mounted switch for manual gear changes. Rear-drive is standard on most trim levels, with four-wheel drive available. Models with the naturally aspirated V-6 are EPA-rated at 17/23 mpg city/highway, while turbocharged EcoBoost models are rated at 16/22 mpg in rear-drive trim and 15/21 mpg with four-wheel drive. The 5.0-liter V-8 is rated at 15/21 mpg, while the 6.2-liter V-8 achieves 13/18 mpg in rear-drive models, 12/16 mpg in four-wheel-drive pickups, or 11/16 mpg in the off-road-focused SVT Raptor.

  A number of different rear axles are available, including a locking 4.10 differential for the F-150 Tremor sport truck. Tow ratings range from 5500-11,300 pounds, depending on equipment. Three bed sizes are offered along with three cab styles. The F-150 Tremor is only available as a regular cab, while the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited are only available in Supercrew. We liked the Ford F-150 enough to name it our 2012 Truck of the Year. During that rigorous program, we said of two F-150 testers we sampled, "Regardless of the drivetrain, the judges were unanimously impressed with the F-150's ability to earn its keep. In towing or hauling, the consensus was both trucks only got better the harder they were working." The EcoBoost engine deserves particular praise for its V-8-like performance and reasonable fuel economy for a full-size pickup.

  Like the body, the F-150's cabin can be configured in numerous ways. Base XL models feature a front bench seat and column shifter in regular cab format, and all others receive front bucket seats with a center console storage bin. Cloth seats, manual locks, manual air conditioning, and an AM/FM radio are standard on XL models. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the range-topping Limited model features standard leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, rearview camera with parking sensors, power tilt/telescope steering wheel with memory, heated and cooled front seats, passive keyless entry, remote start, a 10-speaker CD audio system with MP3 playback capability, USB and iPod interface, Sync with MyFord Touch infotainment and Bluetooth, and a navigation system as standard.

  The Ford F-150 was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, scoring ratings of Good in all categories except the new small overlap front crash test (the truck has yet to be tested). The 2014 Ford F-150 received a four-star rating out of a possible five from the NHTSA.

  The 2013 F150 was not a major update, but saw incremental improvements over the best selling pickup in North America. Ford has the #1 truck and had made significant upgrades recently including the new powertrain lineup in 2011, so major updates truly aren't necessary. It is anticipated that 2015 will be the huge upgrade/overhaul for the F-150 lineup. Think: Ford Atlas Concept.

  Here are the highlights of the new 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition and the new 2014 Tremor Edition F-150, in addition we cover other 2014 F150 details:

  Overall the 2014 lineup is very similar to 2013. The trim levels are: XL, STX, XLT, FX2, FX4, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Tremor (new), Limited, SVT Raptor. If you counted, you'll see that's 11 trim levels (OK 10 if you count FX2/4 as one), so Ford has an F-150 for everyone.

  What's new under the hood

  The engine lineup remains the same, but notable for 2014 is the availablility of a CNG/LPG (compressed natural gas / liquid propane gas) prep package for the 3.7L V6 engine (business/fleet option). This factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package that includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and rings so it can operate on either natural gas or gasoline through separate fuel systems. This will make the F-150 the only half-ton pickup on the market with this capability. From Ford:

  CNG/LPG engine prep from the factory costs approximately $315 before the customer chooses a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors. Upfits run approximately $7,500 to $9,500 depending on fuel tank capacity.

  What's new on the outside Color choices - well for 2014 the only color change is the addition of D7 Sunset Metallic. We're also seeing that same color new for 2014 in the Flex, Explorer, and probably others as well. Grille - FX2 and FX4 trucks receive an updated grille. Headlights - HID (high intensity discharge) headlights are available on XLT and above trim levels now Wheels - 17" machined aluminum wheels with painted accents are now standard on XLT & STX. Also, new 18" & 20" wheels offered on various trim levels What's new on the inside Limited trim level F-150's can have new Marina Blue specialty leather with natural perforation seats Available power-telescoping and powerfolding trailer-tow sideview mirror A conductive cell phone charging station is a standalone dealer-installed accessory and is available on the FX, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited

  The F-150 is produced at the same two plants as last year, the Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Michigan, and the Kansas City Assembly Plant (KCAP) in Claycomo, Missouri.

  2014 Ford F-150 Tremor Edition

  Ford announced on June 27, 2013 a new model to the ever expanding F-150 lineup, the Tremor edition F-150. This shouldn't come as a huge surprise to anyone closely following the F-150 lineup recently. Ford dropped the Harley-Davidson Branded F-150 for the 2012 model year, and introduced a Limited Edition F-150 for 2013, so it's no surprise they are doing their best to keep their #1 position with F-Series truck sales.

  Some of you may be thinking where have I heard the name Tremor before? Well yes this is a nameplate Ford used back in the early 2000's in the Ranger lineup. Looking at the specs of the previous Tremor truck, there really is no comparison. This Tremor packs a big punch with Ford's twin turbo 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine boasting 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque as the standard engine. This is the same engine that's been around since 2011 in the F-150, and similar to the engine also found in the SHO Taurus, Flex, etc.

  The most noteworthy features to mention regarding the 2014 F-150 Tremor are:

  it's based on the FX appearance package truck with flat-black wheels & accents, red & black emblems/badges stylized bodyside decal (sort of a hockey stick stripe design) with Tremor graphic on the box sides red stitching on the steering wheel & seats, with a flow-through console (yes folks this is a 2-seater) available as a regular cab short box configuration (2WD or 4WD) 4.10:1 ratio gears in the differential(s) with electronic locking rear differential helps this thing launch from a stop 2 seats with center flow-through console design

  "The new Tremor gives F-150 customers yet another option to drive a highly capable, distinctive performance truck with features typically found only in the aftermarket," said Brian Bell, F-150 product marketing manager. "Plus, the Built Ford Tough EcoBoost engine is available for the first time in a short-wheelbase F-150."

  So as you can see, this truck is built for both show and go. It's got a very powerful but efficient engine, and an appearance package that helps it stand out. If you've been missing the SVT Lighting F-150, this would be an excellent truck for you! We've heard some call it a baby SVT Raptor or SVT Lightning successor, although Ford doesn't use those words.

  Our verdict on the Tremor? It looks like it will be an excellent street truck with a great engine and looks, we just wish it came lowered from the factory stance. Oh yeah, and a standard transmission would be a nice option too :-)

  The F-150 Tremor is assembled at the Dearborn Truck Plant and goes on sale in the fall of 2013. Pricing has not yet been announced at time of writing.

  2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition

  New for 2014 is a new special edition Raptor truck to the SVT Raptor lineup. The Raptor Special Edition has some unique touches that make this truck special. It is available in two exterior colors, Tuxedo Black Metallic or Ruby Red Metallic.

  The special truck has no mechanical upgrades, the special items are "cosmetic". Features include:

  Brick red seat bolsters with black inserts and cloth honeycomb highlights Brick red headrests (front panel only) Console top finish panel Center stack and door panel appliqué accents The "Raptor SVT" bedside decal is different

  The SVT Raptor (all models) get the 6.2L V8 producing 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque.

  While the choices in full-size half-ton pickups aren't nearly as varied as with family sedans or SUVs, there's still a pretty good selection from which to choose. Nonetheless, the 2014 Ford F-150 continues to be the best-selling truck of them all, year after year. That's not because its rivals are weak; rather, it's because Ford continues to offer customers so many of the features important to them, in a package that's handsome, rugged and reliable.

  From features and fuel economy to towing and hauling, the F-150 has it covered. Depending on the model, you can have everything from a basic work truck to a luxurious country limousine. The F-150 is the first full-size pickup to offer a turbocharged V6 engine and an electronic locking rear axle. It also has several clever little features such as a built-in step inside the bed door and Hill Start Assist, which prevents the truck from rolling backward when stopped on a steep angle.

  What's New for 2014?

  The F-150 receives only minor updates this year. Most notably, xenon headlights are now standard on XLT and above.

  The base F-150 engine is a 3.7-liter V6 good for 302 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. It returns fuel economy of 17 miles per gallon city/23 mpg highway (2-wheel drive) and 16 mpg city/21 mpg hwy (4-wheel drive).

  The twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 produces a very healthy 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque while returning fuel economy of 16 mpg city/22 mpg hwy (2-wheel drive) and 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy (4-wheel drive). Properly equipped, the EcoBoost V6 can tow up to 11,300 pounds and carry a payload of 3,060 pounds.

  In the V8 category, the F-150 offers a 5.0-liter engine rated at 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy figures are 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy (2-wheel drive) and 14 mpg city/19 mpg hwy (4-wheel drive).

  At the top is the monster 6.2-liter V8 rated at 411 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque. Environmental Protection Agency fuel ratings for this engine drop to 13 mpg city/18 mpg hwy (2-wheel drive) and 12 mpg city/16 mpg hwy (4-wheel drive).

  Standard Features & Options

  The F-150 is offered in nine trim levels -- XL, STX, XLT, FX2/FX4, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited and the purpose-built SVT Raptor off-roader. There are three cab options -- regular cab, SuperCab (with small rear doors) and SuperCrew (with full-sized rear doors) and three bed lengths -- 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet and 8 feet. Note that cab and bed availability depend on the selected trim.

  The XL gives you just the basics, so you have steel wheels, manual mirrors and windows, a bench seat with vinyl upholstery and a radio that doesn't even have a CD player or an audio jack. At least air conditioning comes standard, as well.

  The STX steps up to 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, cloth upholstery, powered accessories and a CD stereo with an auxiliary audio input.

  The XLT adds automatic xenon headlights, fog lights, steering-wheel-mounted controls and SYNC voice-command functionality with Bluetooth.

  The FX2 and FX4 (the number denotes 2- or 4-wheel drive) boast 18-in wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, SYNC with a 4.2-in dashboard display, satellite radio, a leather-wrapped steering wheel that both tilts and telescopes and individual front bucket seats with power driver adjustments.

  The Lariat picks up the pace with leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals, a power rear window, power front seats with driver memory and the MyFord Touch infotainment system.

  The King Ranch ups the ante, flaunting extra chrome on the outside, power-folding mirrors with heating and auto-dimming, cooled front seats, heated rear seats, unique Chaparral leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering wheel and a 10-speaker, 700-watt Sony sound system with a subwoofer.

  The Platinum one-ups the King Ranch with 20-in wheels, chrome mirror caps, power running boards, rain-sensing wipers and a navigation system.

  The Limited tops things off with massive 22-in wheels, a sunroof and subtle styling enhancements.

  The SVT Raptor, meanwhile, stands alone as a high-performance, off-road-ready beast. The big 6.2-liter V8 is standard here, as are a roughly 7-in wider track, a special long-travel suspension with Fox racing shocks and cast-aluminum SVT control arms, a unique grille and 17-in black alloy wheels with BF Goodrich off-road tires.

  Safety

  The Ford F-150 comes with anti-lock disc brakes, electronic traction and stability control, front and front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags (for both front and rear passengers on SuperCab and SuperCrew cabs).

  The F-150 scored well in the government's crash tests, though some models got only three out of five stars in the rollover roof strength test. However, the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the F-150 top marks, naming it a Top Safety Pick.

  Behind the Wheel

  Given its impressive towing and payload abilities, one might expect the F-150 to ride like a stiffly sprung work truck. But it doesn't. On the open road and even around town, the F-150 delivers the kind of ride and handling one would expect of a large SUV -- smooth, stable and comfortable. The F-150's electrically assisted power steering delivers good feedback and handles the job of moving the F-150's bulk with ease.

  On rough roads, the F-150 remains composed, remarkably so for a truck. We like the power provided by the 5.0-liter V8 and especially the rowdy 6.2-liter V8, but it's the EcoBoost V6 that most intrigues us. This turbo V6 is an impressively versatile engine, delivering huge supplies of power when asked yet achieving above-average fuel economy when driven gently.

  Other Cars to Consider

  Chevrolet Silverado -- It's just as capable, if not more so, and the Silverado is new for 2014 with a much-improved interior.

  Toyota Tundra -- Also redesigned for 2014, the new Tundra features more macho styling, newly luxurious trim levels and a proven 5.7-liter V8.

  RAM 1500 -- The big news for the 2014 RAM is the arrival of a turbodiesel V6 model that should eclipse the EcoBoost engine's fuel economy.

  AutoTrader's Advice

  With so many trims and models, it's impossible to pick just one. We recommend EcoBoost for most uses, but if you frequently tow heavy loads and/or love the sound and thrust of an American V8, there's no substitute for the 6.2-liter motor.
