4000 without power in Mitchell after high winds down trees - Daily Republic

The storms lacked the punch and devastation found in other parts of the state when the sun came up Monday, but about 4,000 customers in Mitchell were without power for about two hours, primarily around Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, due to tree... He said the overnight storm was caused, in part, because unstable air from two separate systems from the western Plains and from Nebraska meeting up. Those created what are called "bow echos," a system that usually causes straight-line winds of 55... There, they found 90 to 100 mph wind damage but no signs of a tornado, as locals saw blown off roofs and damaged grain bins among the damage. The wind gusts in Mitchell, which topped out at 37 mph at the Mitchell Municipal Airport, paled compared to other recorded gusts in the area. An automated station in the Chamberlain area recorded a wind gust of 73 mph at 2:30 a. m. Monday. Armour and Geddes had wind speeds of 70 and 68 mph overnight, respectively, while Parkston and Salem recorded top speeds of 61 and 57 mph. One of our favorite cooling foods is the incredibly versatile cucumber, a superfood veggie that has everything going for it. Cucumbers are a member of the same plant family as melons and squashes, and are classified as a gourd. Cucumbers are mild in flavor, and while there are dozens of different types of cucumbers that vary in size, taste and texture, they come in two basic varieties: slicing or pickling. Both types are edible, but the slicing cucumbers are often larger and have thicker skins than the pickling kind. English cucumbers come wrapped in plastic, are longer and more slender than the basic green variety, and are favored for their edible, thin skins and nearly seedless flesh. There are many ways to receive these healthy benefits that go beyond simply eating them, like drinking cucumber-infused water or relieving tired, puffy eyes by placing a slice of cold cucumber over each of them for five minutes. We've tried both of these methods and find them extremely pleasant, but our favorite way to get the most from a cucumber is, of course, to eat it.
