A study by IHS Automotive reports that the average age of American vehicles has climbed to a record 11. 5 years and the number in operation has hit a new high of nearly 258 million units. "As long as we have tracked average age, it has gradually risen over time due to the increasing quality of automobiles," said Mark Seng, global aftermarket practice leader at IHS Automotive. "For the five to six years following the recession, however, average age increased about five times its traditional rate, which we attribute to the nearly 40 percent drop in new vehicles sales in 2008-2009. We're now seeing average age begin to... That, combined with the fact that new car registrations outstripped scrappage rates by 42 percent, has led to a larger and older vehicle fleet in the U. S. overall. IHS Automotive also found that the average new car owner keeps a vehicle 77. 8 months, longer than ever before. There’s no better way to evaluate a van or a truck than to, you know, actually use the thing in the manner for which it was designed. We initially wanted to test a bare-bones, long-box, regular-cab version of the current Ram pickup—almost every example that comes through this place is loaded to the gills—but we quickly learned that no such vehicle existed in Chrysler’s press fleet. Then we received an email containing the question, “Would a 4500 chassis cab with a flatbed work. Legally speaking, the truck was clearly in our possession, but it wasn’t in any of our usual parking locations. No, it was parked way off behind our building, next to the dumpster, because a Ram 4500 will not fit in a normal parking spot. But there it was: four doors, 11 feet of flatbed, and nearly 200 inches of gluttonous, outrageous wheelbase. When the 4x4 Crew Cab is built, it doesn’t have a flatbed—or any bed at all. It’s up to the buyer to install whatever they want, be it a utility box, a dump bed, or whatever. So if you’re looking to purchase a truck like this, budget at least $3500 for the most basic 11-foot flatbed like the one seen here. 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Outdoorsman Crew Cab 4x4 Update 5 - Motor Trend

Snow hauled two 40-year-old Vespa show bikes to Las Vegas for a competition, and Lott moved an off-road XR250R and a street-legal XR250L from his friend's home in Los Angeles County to Orange County. With the Ram's bed measuring 5 feet, 7 inches (67 inches) long, the larger scooter, a 69. 6-inch long 1977 Vespa Rally 200, required the use of the pickup's bed extender. Snow found the Ram's adjustable-height air suspension beneficial when loading the scooters into the bed. Even with the ride height on the lowest entry/exit setting, it still required two people to load each scooter, about 200 pounds each, into the back of the Ram. Loading the larger bikes into the bed also required two people and the bed extender, which also kept the ramp in place. After loading the first bike, Lott was pleasantly surprised to see the Ram's air suspension automatically level the bed as we lined up the ramp to load the second bike. With the Ram's large crew cab, which could be used to store smaller items, both Snow and Lott would probably forego the RamBox option for more useable cargo space. Source: www.motortrend.com
