NHTSA has already "tentatively concluded" that Fiat Chrysler has not fixed many of the 11 million vehicles falling under the various recalls in a reasonable time, failed to come up with adequate methods of repairing the defects or not ensured... Opening the hearing, Jennifer Timian, acting director of NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation, outlined a series of recall campaigns which have had problems, including those involving fuel systems catching fire in rear-end collisions, defective... Subaru is recalling more than 72,000 almost-new vehicles because the automatic braking system, which operates in emergencies, can fail. The recall centers on the most recent version of Subaru's Driver Assist System, an automatic braking system designed to prevent collisions with obstacles and other cars. If one of the car's brake lights aren't working, this braking system could fail, according to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Drivers will be notified of a brake light malfunction through a warning light on the dashboard, however the car's internal braking system won't be able to detect the light failure due to a programming error. As a result, drivers will still see an "Obstacle Detected" warning upon approaching an obstacle in the road, but the car won't automatically apply the brakes in an attempt to avoid it.
