Law Enforcement Vehicles Fall Under Massive Airbag Recall - NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Ten Ellis County Sheriff's Department vehicles are not currently being used after Sheriff Johnny Brown ordered them out of service when he learned they fall under a massive nationwide recall. More than 30 million vehicles are affected by defective Takata airbags that when deployed can rupture internally with too much force and send metal fragments flying into the cabin of the vehicle. Departments across North Texas are learning some of the Dodge Chargers they use are affected by the recall, specifically any 2005-2010 Dodge Chargers. "We don't want a deputy getting hurt or somebody that's been arrested getting hit with flying fragments, as well as we have folks that ride out with us, and we didn't want anybody getting hurt. With safety concerns looming, some departments immediately started repairs when the parts were available, including both Irving and Dallas police departments. In Dallas, about 530 of the departments Dodge Chargers fall under the recall, according to Equipment Building Services representative Charitta Johnson. However, Dallas Police did not remove any of the recalled vehicles from service. In Irving, 46 of the police department's more than 250 vehicles are affected by the recall. Source: www.nbcdfw.com

The vehicles may be part of more than 30 million vehicles being recalled in the U. S. due to issues with Takata airbags. According to the recall, the airbags, which were installed on multiple vehicles with various manufacturers, could potentially have a defective component that could cause the airbag to deploy under certain conditions, causing possible injury or... The sheriff’s office was notified by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles officials Friday about the potential problem with the department’s 2010 Dodge Charger police squad cars. Takata has agreed to a national recall of certain types of driver- and passenger-side airbag inflators. The Charger was the go-to car when (the Ford) Crown Vic was (being phased out of production). It has been one headache after another with Chrysler products,” said Ellis County Sheriff Johnny Brown. Now, he said the sheriff’s office is running Chevrolet Tahoes, typically used for two shifts and down for maintenance two shifts, 24-seven instead. “I am just making you aware that we do have issues with cars that could end up in the long run hurting (us),” Brown said. “I am more concerned about my deputies in the car getting injured or somebody we have in the car getting injured.
