Over the past several months we’ve had an Interweb jab-fest with Richard Rawlings and Gas Monkey Garage that led up to an 1/8-mile heads-up showdown of 707-horsepower, Hellcat-powered cars at our Roadkill Nights event on August 12, 2015. We got... They brought a lightweight, back-half ’67 Dart with a Powerglide and a trans brake, while we stuck to the rules we’d set: 3,500 pound minimum, leaf springs, 12-inch tires, and a 2015 Dodge Hellcat engine and trans. Up until now, that’s all you’ve really known, as we’ve been kind of secretive about our prep for the Gas Monkey drag race. First, if you’re new here, the General Mayhem is a ’68 Charger that we traded for a set of cylinder heads a few years ago. Next, we bought a class A motorhome, tore the 440 out of it, threw in some leftovers from our ’73 Fury race car (for 24 Hours of Lemons) and went rally racing, Dukes style. More recently, we yanked the drivetrain out of the General and heaved it into the Crop Duster, our ’70 Plymouth street/strip car. There was a new plan for the General Mayhem: Dodge had become our title sponsor, so we scammed a 2015 SRT Hellcat drivetrain out of them. The plan was to slap the Hellcat drivetrain into the car, then drive it cross-country from Michigan, through the Black Hills and Yellowstone, arriving in Washington. Source: www.hotrod.com

The new generation Toyota Highlander is a carryover from last year’s overhaul but continues to dazzle among competitors for offering a sleeker, more luxury-oriented take on a three-row crossover. You just simply have more of everything, from style to cargo space with the wider third row, and clever features like a roll-top center console big enough store a purse plus a collapsible side tray with second-row captain’s seats. I drove several 2015 Toyota Highlander with the 270-horsepower 3. 5-liter V6 with 248 pound-feet of torque coupled to an upgraded six-speed automatic transmission. Dynamic Torque Control all-wheel drive is available. The Highlander is available in four trims – the LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited and Limited Hybrid – and my Limited trim came with the following standard features: leather upholstery. eight-way power driver’s seat. second-row side sunshades. eight-inch touchscreen display with backup camera. 2-inch color navigation-linked multi-information display. Platinum Package (moonroof, heated steering wheel, captain’s chairs) and nineteen-inch chrome wheels. Total price as described without options came to $42,330. There are a lot of competitors out there for this class, but the models that stand out the most for also offering such notable redesigns are the Dodge Durango, Honda Pilot, Kia Sorento and... The beauty of it over other minivans, however, is that this space is available without having to remove (and store) any of the seats. As well, the second row can be folded flat while the third row is left in place, so there’s half a van of legroom available to those rear passengers. And because the second row seats fold away individually, and the third row is a 60/40 split, the versatility seems endless. The downside is those second-row seats are thinner than other minivan seats, to let them fit into the cargo spaces below the floor (which can be used for extra, hidden storage if the seats are in place). As well, the two-seat maximum in the second row means a Stow ‘n Go-equipped minivan can only seat seven, not the optional eight of some of its competition. The kids were happy in the back seats watching a Blu-ray movie on two separate pull-down screens — one for each row. Almost everything is available at one or another trim level of the Town & Country, which in turn is the more luxurious version of the Dodge Grand Caravan. There are nine trims offered in the Grand Caravan, which begins just under $20,000 (no Stow ‘n Go at that price) and tops out at $33,495, and then another five levels of Town & Country.
