Besides, it gave me a chance to test my 2014 Toyota Tacoma test truck in unusually challenging circumstances. Saddle Up Once the Tacoma was loaded with the necessaries, we set out for the road and the great white north on a roughly 500 mile round trip. Of course a trailer was needed to retrieve the sled, so we hooked up an 18-foot car carrier to the back of the truck that weighs about 3,000 lbs. While this much trailer was wholly unnecessary for a snowmobile, it offered a good test of the Tacoma’s hauling capability. The Tacoma offers generous hook ups for safety chains and a standard two-inch hitch receiver, both of which work well. Our tester was a 4×4 Tacoma double cab outfitted with a V6 engine that makes 236 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. This is the largest engine option for the Tacoma, and its power is adequate. When fully loaded, the trailer/snowmobile combo we had hitched up to the rear of the small Toyota weighed about 3,600 lbs, sitting about 2,800 lbs shy of the truck’s 6,400-lb maximum tow rating and the truck handled it with ease. Before I get into my workhorse review of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner, I want to talk about one of my favorite vehicles I have owned and a pet peeve of mine among the larger SUV segment. It was a proper SUV that looked like a truck, felt like a truck and could do the work of a truck while having plenty of seating for four adults and a huge cargo area. It was big, rugged and very near unstoppable and while it was technically an SUV, it really felt more like a truck in every way. Unfortunately, the trend of SUV sales among people who really don’t need a truck-like vehicle has led many automakers to transform their SUVs from being more like trucks to being more like big cars. The original SUVs were built to work and feel like trucks because they were intended to serve as an alternative to trucks. Today’s SUVs feel like cars because they are usually intended to serve as an alternative to a minivan or a station wagon. Because of that, almost none of the SUVs that I test remind me of a proper SUV like my old Ramcharger. The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is a rare exception, as this midsized SUV feels like an SUV should feel while being able to do many of the things that you can do with a midsized pickup. Toyota Tacoma Still Dominates the Midsize Truck Segment in May [Sales Report] - The Fast Lane

Take a look at the numbers from last year’s report – Pickup sales in May 2014. There were just three entries in the segment a year ago: Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and the Honda Ridgeline. Together they sold 21,963 units in May of 2014 and 99,785 units for the first five months on 2014. Now, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon join the party. The five midsize pickups together sold 34,767 units in May 2015 and 151,208 units in the five months on the year. This is a big 58. 3% increase for the segment for the month and 51. 5% increase over the first five months. Mid-size Trucks – May 2015 Sales Chart Order cut off for GM twins was end of March early April for 2015 models because they were already at max production limits for the balance of the 2015 model year. So production limits is what is holding the twins back in numbers right now. What is impressive right now is that Silverado sales are climbing and 1500 Series GM’s have beat F150 sales for last 2 mths and had over 70,000 May sales.
