2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Expert Review

    By Matt Degen

    KBB Expert Rating: 7.8

Like its near-twin the Chevrolet Silverado, the slightly more upscale GMC Sierra arrives in fresh form for 2014 with more power and a well-designed interior blessed with the latest tech and safety features. The 2014 Sierra still spans a variety of trims and configurations to appeal to a broad range of pickup buyers, from a rather basic work truck to the leather-laden Sierra Denali. All benefit from new V6 and V8 engines that can pull more than their predecessors yet travel a bit farther on a gallon of gas. While it's no secret that brand loyalty is a key buying factor in a segment that includes the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra, the Sierra distinguishes itself from rivals with surprising creature comforts and potent powertrains.

    You'll Like This Car If...

The 2014 Sierra's innovative powertrains and handsome aesthetics should appeal to longtime GMC fans and tempt buyers new to the brand. In just one of many "mine is bigger" battles in the half-ton truck market, the 2014 Sierra's 12,000-pound max tow rating is expected to be king – at least for now.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The 2014 Sierra's 6-speed automatic transmission isn't as smooth as the Ram 1500's available 8-speed. There's also no denying that this is indeed a full-size truck whose big dimensions are noticeable every time you pull into a small lot or garage. Smaller, more maneuverable alternatives are the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma.

From its exterior and interior design to its three engine choices, the GMC Sierra is all-new for 2014. Gone is the slow-selling hybrid version.

Driving the Sierra 1500 Crew Cab

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Front angle view photo

Driving Impressions The 2014 GMC Sierra is a truck ready for work and play, with the power and creature comforts ably doing their part in both respects. In our test-drive of a...

... Sierra with the new 5.3-liter V8 engine, it felt capable in nearly every situation. On the highway, the Sierra is surprisingly quiet. Most road imperfections are absorbed well by the truck's suspension, though we were reminded of its rugged body-on-frame construction during one particularly bad stretch of the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. There, the Sierra bucked like a bronco, and it would not be our choice if driven daily on that type of road. Towing ability is a strong point. We had no problem hauling a 5,000-pound Airstream trailer up steep grades with the 5.3-liter engine, and appreciated that the available trailer brake controller is within easy reach of the steering wheel. The telematics system gets a solid B grade, but the rear-view camera could be higher resolution (especially if you routinely hitch up), and audio functions could respond faster.

    Favorite Features

CONNECTED INFOTAINMENTThe Sierra's available technology gives new meaning to "work truck." Higher trims include the IntelliLink touch-screen system to operate navigation, audio and more. We were equally impressed by its five (5!) USB inputs and an AC outlet that can keep a bounty of devices juiced and ready to play.

DRIVER ALERT SEATThis optional but important safety feature works with the Sierra's lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems by vibrating the seat to alert the driver of potential danger. Ingeniously, it can vibrate each side independently. If you drift to the left, for example, the left side of the seat vibrates.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Dashboard, center console, gear shifter view photoInterior

With big buttons and knobs coated in rubber for easy grip even when wearing gloves, the Sierra's roomy interior is built with work in mind. Yet it also can be as luxurious as your checkbook is large, with features such as ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and communication ports that will outnumber most drivers' devices. Cab configurations include regular with a bench seat for up three passengers, double cab with seating for five or six, and crew cab with the most room for five or six. As should be expected in a big truck, the front seats are massive. Flip-up rear seats offer more cargo versatility.

    Exterior

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab photo

GMC has wisely taken an evolutionary approach to the 2014 Sierra's freshened exterior. We'll dub it "contemporary macho." Like previous models, this full-size truck features blocky styling highlighted by swollen fender flares and a grille that would do a semi-truck truck proud. With the new styling come practical innovations like corner steps built into the rear bumper. These provide a foothold for bed access, and by design are covered to mitigate slipping in wet environments. Handgrips and available bed-mounted LED lights are other features we like. Bed lengths range from 5 feet, 8 inches to 8 feet. Double-cab models now have standard front-hinged rear doors for easier access.

    Notable Equipment

    Standard Equipment

The most basic 2014 Sierra is still pretty much that and includes features like air conditioning, cruise control, cloth seats, and an AM/FM radio with a 4.2-inch color display and USB/SD inputs, but no CD player, Bluetooth, or telescoping steering wheel. Step up to an SLE trim and you'll get a rear-vision camera, 6-speaker audio and 17-inch wheels made of premium aluminum instead of steel. SLT trims bring features like the 5.3-liter V8 engine, dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch touch-screen command center, power-adjustable pedals, and leather-appointed seats. Foremen will appreciate the Sierra Denali's 20-inch chrome wheels, navigation system, Bose audio system, and leather-clad front bucket seats.

    Optional Equipment

Add-ons are available across the entire 2014 Sierra lineup to make it more functional and comfortable. All Sierras can be equipped with 4-wheel drive instead of the standard rear-wheel drive. Those seeking the most power and towing capability should look to the 6.2-liter V8 available on Sierra SLT and Denali models. Other options of note include the Driver Alert Package with lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, plus front and rear park-assist. The All-Terrain Package includes an off-road suspension with Rancho shocks, an underbody shield and 18-inch wheels. Interior comforts include heated and cooled front seats, navigation, a power sunroof, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

    Under the Hood

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Engine photo

Three engine choices are available on the 2014 GMC Sierra: a 4.3-liter V6, 5.3-liter V8, or the top-dog 6.2-liter V8 available for SLT and Denali models. All are linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission and have laudable towing capacity, including the V6's max of 7,200 pounds. On the other end is the 6.2-liter V8 that can pull up to 12,000 pounds. With the ability to tow 11,500 pounds and a highway rating of 22 mpg, the 5.3-liter V8 is the middle child in GMC's new engine lineup and offers a good balance of power and efficiency. All the engines use technology such as direct injection and Active Fuel Management, which allows them to run on fewer cylinders and thus use less fuel. The engines can run on regular unleaded gasoline or E85.

    Pricing Notes

With the Sierra's wide range of configurations come a wide range of prices. A base, regular-cab 2014 Sierra has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $25,085. Double-cab models start at $29,110, while Crew Cab models begin at $33,210. Of course, start climbing trim levels and adding options, and these prices can climb by tens of thousands of dollars. A fully-equipped Sierra SLT or Denali, for example, can easily break the $50,000 mark. The Sierra's starting price is in line with that of the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra, while the Nissan Titan (available in King Cab and Crew Cab only) starts around $30,000. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. The Sierra's resale value is projected to be in line with that of its domestic rivals and the Nissan Titan, but behind that of the segment-leading Toyota Tundra.

2014 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab Expert Review

    By KBB.com Editors

    KBB Expert Rating: 7.3

When the job at hand requires more grunt than a standard 1500 pickup truck can manage, those in the know call on the big guns from GMC, namely the 2014 GMC Sierra HD. Available in both 3/4- and 1-ton configurations, the Sierra HD has the muscle and frame strength to tow, haul and push objects that would leave lesser trucks burning up transmissions and dropping driveshafts. Beyond its numerous cab and axle configurations the Sierra HD also includes the Denali trim that brings a touch of sophistication to this working-class pack mule. Similar trucks from Ram and Ford offer roughly the same features and abilities, as well as resale, leaving the choice of getting a GMC purely up to buyer perception and preference.

    You'll Like This Car If...

If you need to haul big payloads exceeding 10,000 pounds or conventionally tow up to 18,000 pounds, the 2014 GMC Sierra HD has you covered. The Denali trim should hold special appeal for those who use their work truck as a daily driver.

You May Not Like This Car If...

While the Sierra HD is powerful, it's not the king of the hill. The Ram 3500's 30,000-pound max towing capacity is off the charts, and its styling both inside and out is more modern than the Sierra HD.

For 2014, the gasoline-powered GMC Sierra gets a new standard 4.10 rear axle. The previous 3.73 axle remains optional. Also new are an available spray-in bedliner and the expansion of the bi-fuel gas/CNG 6.0-liter V8 to the 2500 model line.

Driving the Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab

2014 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab Front angle view photo

Driving Impressions With its powerful 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 hard at work under the massive hood, we discovered our 2014 GMC Sierra 2500 HD had no trouble at all towing a 10,000-pound...

... trailer. A viable option to the gas V8, the turbodiesel churns out a healthy 397 horsepower and an even more astonishing 765 lb-ft of torque. For those taking notes, that's more horsepower but less torque than the Ram HD and less horsepower but more torque than Ford's Powerstroke diesel. As the towing and payload wars heat up, Ford's F-450 and Ram's 3500 currently take top marks for max towing, yet the Sierra beats the Ram in the area of conventional towing and payload. In our extensive testing of the complete Sierra lineup in rear-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive iterations, we found all the trucks exhibited a firm yet comfortable ride, acceptable steering feedback and excellent stopping power.

    Favorite Features

EXHAUST BRAKINGA feature we really came to love is the diesel powertrain's "smart" exhaust braking. The system works by progressively restricting exhaust output, which in turn helps slow the truck via engine-compression braking.

BI-FUEL SYSTEMOffering a cleaner-burning alternative to gasoline, the bi-fuel CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine offers the ability to power the 2014 GMC Sierra HD with a readily abundant domestic resource. The lofty $11,000 premium might turn some away, but with CNG running under $2 a gallon, the savings over the long haul might prove fruitful.

The 2014 GMC Sierra HD Work Truck (WT), SLE and SLT interiors are designed to function seamlessly with a wide range of conventional truck duties. But despite the cabin's utilitarian intent, most trims come nicely appointed with adequate materials' quality and fit and finish. While it lacks the bounty of storage bins and compartments found in the Ram and Ford HD trucks, the 2014 GMC Sierra HD nevertheless has a number of useful storage ideas for everything from laptops to the errant tool. On the luxury front, Denali variants feature a distinctive brushed-aluminum trim, leather upholstery and soft-touch materials on the upper dash.

    Exterior

2014 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab photo

The imposing look of the Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD trucks is set off with a massive 3-bar chrome grille flanked by the nameplate's signature stacked headlights. For better engine cooling, the raised power-dome hood incorporates a functional set of louvers. The upscale Denali trim is distinguished by its color-keyed bumpers, 4-bar grille with chrome mesh inserts, and matching lower grille design. If you are on the fence between a half-ton and a 3/4-ton truck, it's worth noting that the load-in height (distance from the ground to the top of the cargo bed floor) is over five inches taller with the HD version.

    Notable Equipment

    Standard Equipment

GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD models are available in regular-cab, extended-cab and crew-cab body styles as well as four trim levels: Work Truck, SLE, SLT or Denali. SLE models include a CD player, air conditioning, power windows and driver's seat adjustment, while SLT trims feature heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity and fog lights. Top-level Denali versions include ventilated and 12-way power-adjustable front seats, a Bose premium audio system and power-retractable side mirrors. Occupant safety consists of six airbags, a full complement of electronic stability systems and OnStar emergency/concierge services.

    Optional Equipment

Given the Sierra's limited rear visibility, the optional rearview camera tops our list of recommended add-ons. Also on the menu is a feature-laden convenience package comprising power-adjustable pedals, rear sonar proximity sensors designed to help guide you into tight park spots with audible warnings, and a slam-proof EZ-lift and lower tailgate (SLT only). Seeing as the available touch-screen navigation unit is a bit long in the tooth, technophiles who want the latest and greatest in multimedia will be better off with the F-250's optional MyFord Touch infotainment system.

    Under the Hood

2014 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab Engine photo

Every 2014 GMC Sierra HD features a standard 6.0-liter Vortec V8 with cam-in-block variable valve timing (VVT), which provides more power at high rpm and better fuel efficiency. For jobs requiring a significant amount of power there's the recently overhauled Duramax turbodiesel that produces an earth-moving 765 lb-ft of torque. As a bonus, the Duramax powerplant is compatible with B20 biodiesel. Like most of today's clean diesels, nitrous-oxide emissions are reduced by means of a Selective Catalyst Reduction after-treatment system, which uses urea-based Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) as a cleaning agent. While the DEF tank needs a refill every 5,000 miles, urea-based solution or AdBlue, as it's known, is available at most major auto parts retailers.

    Pricing Notes

In base Work Truck form, the 2014 GMC Sierra 2500 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of just under $31,000, with the 3500 series tacking an additional $1,500 to the bottom line. The 2500 and 3500 Denali trims come in at around $48,000 and top out close to $65,000. Adding 4-wheel drive to the mix will set you back an extra $3,000. The Ford Super Duty and Ram HD each share a similar price range with the 2014 Sierra HD. To get a better idea of what others in your area are paying for the GMC Sierra HD, take a look at KBB.com's Fair Purchase Price at the bottom of this page. Like its heavy-duty challengers, the 2014 Sierra HD is expected to maintain average 5-year residual values.

  • 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L 4x4 Crew Cab Test – Review – Car ...

    TESTED

You don’t need to be an automotive expert to realize that the pickup trucks from GMC and Chevrolet share more than just a parent company. In fact, the GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Z71 crew cab tested here and its Chevrolet Silverado 1500 corporate sibling are so similar, plotting their shared DNA in a Venn diagram would reveal an almost-perfect circle. Despite this, both trucks maintain a fiercely loyal and disparate customer base, and although they’ve never proactively promoted the perception, it’s a scenario that GM and its dealer body are happy to let play out on its own. The way we see it, GMC hits all the same marks as Chevy, but with a little extra panache.

    Déjà Vu

Let’s get the obvious bits out of the way first: The grille, the front bumper, and the hood are unique to the Sierra, as are the projector-beam headlamps and the lower fascia. SLT models such as our test truck also get a row of LEDs below the lamps. A touch of chrome bling along the base of the side windows and some black trim on the fender flares are also GMC-only features.

The interior walks the same path, adding small touches such as genuine aluminum trim and veneer bits to differentiate it from the Chevy. Although not exclusive to the Sierra, the giant center console is a must-have in this segment, and we had no problem filling it up with such random detritus of modern life as cups, phones, and paperwork. The seats are wide enough to wear a La-Z-Boy tag. The two trucks also share aluminum hoods, a weight-saving feature made obvious when the Sierra’s engine lid began undulating under the air pressure of the industrial blow dryers in our local carwash.

    Buy the Numbers

For 2014, the GMC Sierra 1500 hierarchy of trim levels stacks up like this: base, SLE, SLT, and Denali. Our SLT-trimmed test truck arrived with an ample level of standard equipment (heated mirrors, the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8, a 110-volt interior outlet, a tilting-and-telescoping steering wheel, remote start, and a trailering package), as well as a treasure trove of options. The $400 SLT Preferred package brought a heated steering wheel and power-sliding rear window, and the $845 Driver Alert package added lane-departure warning, park assist, and collision alert. Adding a power sunroof cost $945, and the Off-Road package (complete with “Z71” badging) cost $430. The ludicrously titled SLT Crew Cab Value package (chrome steps, Bose audio, 20-inch aluminum wheels) added a whopping $2195 to the bottom line. And a $230 set of Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tires and $200 trailer-brake control rounded out the list. All in, we were staring down a total of $50,185, including a $1000 discount GMC throws in for ordering the aforementioned SLT Crew Cab Value package.

Equipped with GM’s EcoTec3 5.3-liter V-8, a six-speed automatic, and a 3.08:1 rear axle, our Sierra nailed a 7.3-second 0-to-60 time, 0.6 second slower than our recently tested Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 crew cab with the same engine and transmission but with the optional 3.42 rear axle. The gap tightened in the quarter-mile, the Sierra clocking 15.7 seconds to the Silverado’s 15.3. Weighing 5650 pounds, our Sierra tipped the scales a negligible 45 pounds heavier than the Silverado.

  • 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4WD First Drive - Motor ...

2014 Gmc Sierra Front View With Airstream 02 There has been one consistent criticism of the 2014 GMC Sierra and its Chevrolet twin: GM played it safe on drivetrain technology. To take such a conservative approach to a key component has led critics to infer that the whole truck was an exercise in doing the bare minimum, and, as such, wouldn't be competitive with the latest and greatest from Ford and Ram.

    More on Motortrend.com:

Those inferences are wrong. It says something about the quickening pace of automotive technology development that direct injection is viewed as plebeian and passé. The fact is, GM's EcoTec3 engines may look similar, but are big improvements on a tried-and-true formula. The first-ever production, direct-injected, pushrod engines offer better power and fuel economy, GM says, and to prove it, GMC took us "glamping" -- glamorous camping. 2014 Gmc Sierra Slt Static Rear Three Quarters Made-up words aside, the real point was to get us behind the wheel of a Sierra 1500 with a 5500-pound, 23-foot Airstream trailer behind it. GMC claims that 60 percent of its buyers tow, and, incidentally, it also claims best-in-class towing and best-in-class fuel economy while towing, a clear shot at Ford's EcoBoost V-6. Bold claims require bold tests, so immediately after hooking up the Airstream, I made an intentional wrong turn and drove straight to the Conejo Grade, which connects the cities of Camarillo and Thousand Oaks, California. The Conejo Grade is no rolling hill. It's a 7 percent grade that climbs roughly 1000 vertical feet in less than 3 miles and is among the steepest freeway grades in California. By way of comparison, the Davis Dam Grade used in the new SAE J2807 towing standard test (to which the 2014 Sierra, like most of its competition, does not conform) varies from a 3 percent to a 7 percent grade, averaging 5 percent. The Airstream's 5500 pounds is well within the Sierra's tow ratings, particularly our 5.3-liter V-8-equipped example, which without the Max Tow Package was rated at 9600 pounds rather than 11,500. Attacking the grade at 55 mph (mandated for all vehicles pulling a trailer in California), I had to keep the pedal nearly on the floor to maintain my speed up the hill. Impressively, if I went all the way to the floor, the Sierra would actually start to pick up speed while climbing the grade. On the way back down, Tow/Haul mode dropped the transmission into a lower gear the first time I touched the brakes and allowed the drivetrain to do much of the braking, so only a bit of light braking was needed to keep the speed right where I wanted it. No sweat at all. 2014 Gmc Sierra Slt Front Three Quarters When not climbing mountains, the trailer was barely a burden. Sufficiently prodded, the truck and trailer would climb freeway on-ramps from a stop reasonably quickly and didn't flinch at stoplights. The 5.3-liter V-8 makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft and is equipped with an Active Fuel Management mode that shuts off half of the cylinders under light loads. I saw the "V-4" icon pop up fairly often, even while towing, and far more often than on older GM trucks. The actual transition from four- to eight-cylinder mode and back was a seamless non-event. With the gain dialed in on the integrated trailer brake, brakes were strong and responsive and never felt underpowered. My two towing-related gripes are with visibility. First, the back-up camera is surprisingly low res, which negates some of the advantage of using it when backing up to a trailer, as it was difficult to see where the ball hitch and tongue were. Second, the standard mirrors are too small for towing. Larger mirrors are available with the Max Tow Package, but for the guy who doesn't plan to tow more than 9000 pounds and wants to save a few bucks, it would be nice if bigger mirrors were standard. 2014 Gmc Sierra Front View With Airstream The other half of GMC's big promise is fuel economy, so I kept an eye on it. According to the truck's on-board computer, I saw 16.2 mpg while driving around unladen and 10.9 mpg while towing. Sister publication Truck Trend performed a fuel economy test without a trailer and saw a verified 17.2 mpg. Our long-term F-150 EcoBoost, by way of comparison, was averaging 14.2 mpg at last update. Average the numbers we got with the Sierra and you come out slightly ahead of the Ford at 14.7 mpg. Promise kept. She goes and she tows, but what's she like to drive? Very pleasant, as you might expect from the upscale truck brand. GMC seems to have cribbed more than a few tricks from friends down the hall at Buick, as the Sierra is shockingly quiet inside. No joke: I dropped off the Sierra and jumped into a BMW 750Li, and the BMW had more tire noise in the cabin. There's a slight growl from the Sierra's motor if you ask for it, but the aftermarket exhaust guys have their work cut out for them. Driving around unloaded, the Sierra rides a bit stiff, translating a lot of little bumps into the cabin. It's otherwise comfortable and smooth. Without a trailer in the way, outward visibility is good in all directions and it's got plenty of pluck. The steering has a good weight to it and the turning radius is surprisingly tight even when equipped with 4WD. In addition to being quiet, the new cabin is a pretty nice place to stay. The new dash looks properly modern but retains solid, simple ergonomics and big, easy-to-use buttons. The GMC MyLink touch-screen infotainment system is user-friendly, changes pages fairly quickly, and features redundant controls for those who want buttons, though it's missing a hard button to take you directly to the nav screen. The color display in the gauge cluster is likewise easy to use with the steering wheel controls and easy to read. Finally, the seats are wide and soft, perfect for a long drive out to the campground, and surround you with plenty of room to stretch out, especially in the rear. Once you're at the campground and free of the trailer, the Sierra becomes a competent off-roader. We took our shift-on-the-fly, Z71 Off-Road Package-equipped truck past where the pavement ends and onto some poorly maintained fire roads to see if that low-hanging, aerodynamically efficient nose would be a problem. Clearly, it wasn't going to crawl rocks like a Jeep, but we never once dragged the nose, even on the bumpiest dirt roads. We did encounter a problem up top, where the massive square hood made it impossible to see what was directly in front of the truck, especially when cresting a hill. Ride quality in the dirt was as good as any truck short of a Raptor, and the stock Goodyear Wrangler tires had no trouble finding grip. 2014 Gmc Sierra Front Three Quarter View On top of all that, we also spent some time with a V-6-equipped truck. The 285-hp, 4.3-liter V-6 makes 305 lb-ft of torque and, quite honestly, if you're not towing more than its 7500-pound rating, it's all the truck you need. There were a few notable differences between the V-6 and V-8 trucks. Initial throttle response was better on the V-6, making it feel quicker to jump off the line. In everyday driving without a load, it almost felt quicker than the V-8. Part of that was the sound, which was a bit louder in the cab than the V-8. Finally, the V-6 seemed to spend far less time in Active Fuel Management mode -- running on four cylinders instead of six -- than the V-8. It makes sense with the extra work the V-6 has to do to move the truck, but I can't ignore a slight disappointment at not seeing the green "V-4" icon more often. The upside is that the transition between modes was as seamless as on the V-8. The 2014 GMC Sierra took a lot of heat from enthusiasts, our quarter included, for playing it safe and not keeping up with the Joneses in Dearborn and Auburn Hills. What seemed obvious on paper, though, did not translate to the actual truck. No, the Sierra hasn't leapfrogged the Ram or F-150, but it's a solid, capable truck fully prepared to go head to head with its rivals, which probably weren't expecting the competition. 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 BASE PRICE $44,420 PRICE AS TESTED $51,485 LAYOUT Front-engine, 4WD, 5-pass, 4-door truck ENGINE 5.3L/355-hp*/383-lb-ft* OHV 16-valve V-8 TRANSMISSION 6-speed automatic WHEELBASE 143.5 in LENGTH x WIDTH x HEIGHT 229.5 x 80.0 x 74.0 in CURB WEIGHT 5218 lb (mfr) GVWR 7200 lb PAYLOAD CAPACITY 1982 lb TOWING CAPACITY 9600 lb EPA CITY/HWY FUEL ECON 16/22 mpg ENERGY CONSUMPTION, CITY/HWY 211 / 153 kW-hrs/100 miles CO2 EMISSIONS 1.06 lb/mi ON SALE IN U.S. Summer 2013 *SAE certified
