How Ford Made Its F-150 Pickup Lighter and Safer Than Ever - Wired

The 2014 Ford F-150 had a 4-star NHTSA overall safety rating, making it as good as or better than any pickup on the US market, except for the 5-star Chevy Silverado. Ford’s complete redesign of the truck for 2015 included a switch to an all-aluminum body that made the F-150 hundreds of pounds lighter, improving fuel economy and towing capacity. It also gave Ford the chance to go after that fifth star. As part of the redesign, Ford added 31 new safety features, including neat things like rear seat belts that inflate in a crash, acting like a softening airbag. Source: www.wired.com

(CNN) — What was Amtrak engineer Brandon Bostian doing and thinking when his speeding train careened off the rails in Philadelphia, killing at least seven people and sending over 200 more to the hospital. That’s what Bostian’s lawyer told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Thursday, saying his client “has absolutely no recollection whatsoever of the events” after losing consciousness in the crash Tuesday night. “He remembers coming into the curve (and) attempting to reduce speed,” the attorney, Robert Goggin, said. “… The last thing he recalls is coming to, looking for his bag, getting his cell phone, turning it on and calling 911. ”. Initial data show the train barreled into a curve at about 106 mph before it derailed, National Transportation Safety Board... That’s more than twice the 50-mph speed limit for the curve, and above the 80-mph limit immediately before it. Investigators haven’t determined why the train was going so fast, whether it was due to human or mechanical error. The engineer can’t recall engaging the emergency brake, even though Sumwalt has said he did so “just moments” before the train derailed. A police official said that authorities have since tried to talk to Bostian, but he refused and left with a lawyer.
