By the time Marion Lambert arrived at the base of the massive Confederate battle flag he helped erect within view of Interstate 75, a small crowd had gathered. Billed as the nation’s largest Confederate flag at 50 by 30 feet, the banner flies from a 139-foot-tall flag pole at the manicured Confederate Memorial Park. Wilson, who had met Lambert at a Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting years earlier, had donated money to help create the memorial. He wore a Confederate flag ring, belt, hunting cap and a T-shirt that read “It ain't over. “I don’t know how it just happened overnight,” Wilson said of the backlash against the flag, adding that he intended to keep selling flags at local festivals as a sideline. Lambert and the Sons of Confederate Veterans built the park after raising $150,000 six years ago. Public sentiment has turned against the Confederate flag in the wake of the shooting of nine African American church members in Charleston, S. C. , on June 17, and the arrest of a self-described white supremacist. Public officials have called for the removal of Confederate battle flags, memorials and monuments across the country. Injuries reported in 2-vehicle crash on Latson Road - Livingston Daily

Undersheriff Michael Murphy said preliminary investigation indicated that a 29-year-old Howell man driving a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze rear-ended a 2015 Ford F-250 pickup while it was stopped on northbound Latson Road at the M-59 traffic light around... “He was distracted or had a medical condition. Howell Area firefighters had to extricate the Cruze driver, who was then transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor for treatment. He was last listed in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday afternoon. The pickup driver, identified as a 56-year-old Ann Arbor man who was driving a work truck filled with equipment, was treated and released at the scene, Murphy said. Source: www.livingstondaily.com

Police ID Howell man killed in crash - Livingston Daily

Green Oak Township police identified the motorcyclist killed in a head-on crash Thursday evening as Donald Lee Thompson III. Thompson, a former Portland man who recently moved to Howell, was described in his obituary as a man who enjoyed playing “Call of Duty” and “Destiney” on his Xbox as well as restoring and working on cars, hunting, and fishing. Police said the 28-year-old former Portland man was operating a 2007 Suzuki GSX-R 600 motorcycle east on Emerson Drive “above the posted speed limit” when he “failed to properly control the motorcycle and negotiate a curve in the roadway,”... The pickup driver saw the motorcycle approaching and had almost slowed to a stop while attempting to avoid a collision, police said. The pickup driver, identified as a 49-year-old Howell man, was not injured in the crash. Green Oak Township firefighters as well as Livingston County sheriff’s deputies, EMS and the medical examiner assisted at the scene. Source: www.livingstondaily.com
