SYRACUSE, N. Y. – At an age when many folks look forward to a hot delivery from Meals on Wheels, Gene Winfield is planning to pound out his next/best hot rod. Legendary car customizer Robert Eugene Winfield celebrated his 88th birthday on June 16 with family at his home in Mojave, Calif. , after a typical work day. “Oh, I’m down to about 10 hours a day,” Winfield said in a sit-down interview with RT. “I was at 14 hours but I’m 10 or 12 now. I work on cars every day I’m home in the high desert, near Palmdale. Those future projects too often take a back seat to Winfield’s NASCAR-like travel schedule of workshops and show appearances. Winfield has returned to Central New York for this weekend’s 16th annual PPG Syracuse Nationals Car Show at the New York State Fairgrounds. “During July I will only be home six-and-a-half days the whole month,” said Winfield, who began this visit with a workshop on Tuesday. “I go home from Syracuse on Monday for a day then to Salina, Kansas, to – I forget – for another workshop. Winfield, who has over 60 years of experience in custom car fabrication as well as land speed and oval-track racing, will schmooze with fans in the ‘Cuse before handing out the sixth annual Winfield Award Saturday night.
