Keel Laid for Second Ford-Class Aircraft Carrier - The Maritime Executive
By MarEx 2015-08-23 04:53:09. Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries celebrated the keel laying of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) on Sunday. The vessel is the second ship of the Gerald R. Ford class. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the ship's namesake, the 35th President of the United States, is the ship's sponsor. The plate will be permanently affixed to the ship, signifying the sponsor's enduring relationship with the shipbuilders and crew. In his remarks, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Sean Stackley expressed the significance of aircraft carriers, calling upon shipbuilders to recognize the importance of what they build. Kennedy will be the second U. S. Navy ship to bear the name of the 35th President. Like its forerunner CVN 78, Kennedy is a truly electric aircraft carrier, with many of the systems powered by steam on Nimitz-class carriers now powered by electricity. The ship is designed to save the Navy $4 billion in total ownership cost over the ship's 50-year lifespan, with fewer overall components, extended drydocking interval, improved ship-wide air conditioning and more. Up for Debate - The Weekly Standard
Needless to say, The Scrapbook is strictly neutral on the results of last week’s Republican presidential debate on Fox News. So neutral, in fact, that we won’t even mention any of the highlights—or lowlights, if you prefer—and certainly won’t weigh in on who swept the floor with whom, who embarrassed him/herself, or who should have been invited to this particular... No, we’ll leave the handicapping to those who spend more time around the racetrack than The Scrapbook is inclined to do. Our interest is not in this particular debate but in the institution of presidential debates themselves. Or put another way: Are these televised debates good for our democracy, or not so good. The first presidential debates took place as recently as 1960—which is to say, we managed to elect Thomas Jefferson and Calvin Coolidge, and defeat William Jennings Bryan and Adlai Stevenson, without the benefit of candidate debates. Yes, Abraham Lincoln once participated in some famous debates (1858) with Stephen Douglas, but that was for a Senate seat, not the presidency—and Lincoln lost the race. Moreover, after 1960, there were no more debates until the idea was revived in 1976, pitting Gerald Ford against Jimmy Carter. All of which means that Lincoln, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, both Roosevelts, and Dwight D. Eisenhower were elected to the White House without ever participating in a single debate. Benton L. Becker, negotiator of Ford's pardon of Nixon in 1974, dies at 77 - Washington Post
Becker, who acted as the liaison between President Gerald R. Ford and his predecessor, Richard M. Nixon, during the delicate negotiations that led to Ford’s pardon of Nixon in September 1974, died Aug. A onetime federal prosecutor, Mr. Becker came to know Ford while working on the staff of the House Judiciary Committee in the late 1960s, when Ford was a congressman from Michigan. After Ford was named vice president in 1973, Mr. Becker became an unpaid adviser, working alongside White House counsel Philip W. Buchen. Ford became president on Aug. Soon afterward, Ford and Buchen asked Mr. Becker to investigate the constitutional authority of issuing a presidential pardon to the disgraced Nixon. Rightly or not, Ford believed a pardon would save the country from unnecessary political bloodletting. In early September 1974, Mr. Becker flew to Nixon’s home in San Clemente, Calif. One of Ford’s demands, Mr. Becker told author and investigative journalist Seymour M. Hersh , was that Nixon admit guilt in the Watergate affair. In California, Mr. Becker negotiated primarily with Nixon’s lawyer, Herbert J. Miller, and with Ronald L. Ziegler, Nixon’s former press secretary. Source: www.washingtonpost.com
