Walter Burton Ford was a college mathematics professor and authored several college and high school mathematics textbooks. As a retired professor, Ford added to his fame in the Ovid community through his donations that made the present library and former municipal building possible. Many Ovid area residents fondly remember their contacts with Ford and/or his wife, Edith, in the years they resided at Elm Beach following his 1940 retirement from the University of Michigan. Walter Burton Ford was born in Oneonta on May 18, 1874, the son of Sylvester and Emogene Burton Ford. Ford graduated from Oneonta public schools and its State Normal School. In 1895, he enrolled at Harvard and graduated magna cum laude in 1897, receiving his master’s degree in 1898. Ford became a teacher at Albany Academy. The University of Michigan sent out a call to Harvard for a likely young man who could be hired as a math instructor and Harvard recommended Ford. The instructor job at Michigan made it financially possible for Ford to marry his girlfriend, Edith Banker, on Oct. Source: www.fltimes.com

Greg Tennis is so 1970. Actually, it's his car -- a 1970 Plymouth AAR Barracuda that he bought off Craigslist about eight years that's now fully restored inside and out. "I think it's beautiful," Tennis said, adding the work was done at St. Croix Collision in Hastings and at Broadway Automotive in St. Paul Park. His 'Cuda will represent 1970 at "The History of Cars 2" classic car show Saturday in downtown Hastings -- an event featuring a car for nearly every year between 1901 and 1970. Every car -- 68 in all -- is original or restored to original condition. Organizers are expecting thousands of spectators to roll into the city's quaint downtown for the free event, which is meant to help mark the 10th year of the city's Saturday Night Cruise-In shows. Saturday's history show will begin with a parade that finishes with the cars lined up along Second Street according to year. "What we're trying to show is the evolution of cars," said Doug McKinnon, one of four car enthusiasts who had the task of tracking down one-of-kind cars for the Downtown Hastings Business Association, the event organizer. Just like the first "car history" event in 2009, this year's show lacks a car from 1900. "There are some around -- the Stanley Steamers -- but we could not find one," McKinnon said. Another year with a missing car is 1903. Others on the vehicle search crew were Dick Raths of Oakdale, Todd Langenfeld of Prescott, Wis. Every classic car has a story behind it, McKinnon said.
