Cheeseburger in Caseville contest winner turned 1937 Ford dump truck into grill - MLive.com

CASEVILLE, MI — For Brandon Kretzschmer, it isn't just secret ingredients that make his burgers special. He smokes them in an old milk barrel and then lets them marinade in a 1937 Ford dump truck. Kretzschmer, 27, and his father, Steve Kretzschmer, were able to convert the truck into a grill just in time for the 10-day festival, which started Aug. After bringing the truck home from auction, Brandon Kretzschmer said he and his father cut off the back, removed the motor and completely gutted it. then they painted the inside with high-resistant paint consistent with health codes and installed... It was Steve Kretzschmer's idea to create the truck-grill after they sold more and more burgers each year and needed more space to cook. " For now, the truck is just a grill, but it'll be a smoker once they have time to finish it. They used that grill to marinate the burgers in a secret seasoning after cooking them. To cook the meat, it's placed in an old milk barrel that Steve Kretzschmer converted into a smoker several years ago. They smoked the burgers with oak from a tree Kretzschmer cut down for the project. "It makes a difference," Kretzschmer said, comparing oak to hickory. They sold an "old school, classic burger" for $6, while many of the other competitors sold more extravagant concoctions. Source: www.mlive.com

Editorial: Eagle honors - The Daily News Online

When Michael Schuth became an Eagle Scout three years ago, his parents, Cathy and David Schuth of Kendall, had reason to be proud. Only 4 percent of boys who join Boy Scouts ever make Eagle Scout rank. Michael’s younger brothers, twins Matthew and Nick, received their Eagle Scout badges Aug. “I’ve been a professional in Scouting for 22 years and was a volunteer before that,” said Jess Markel, the senior district Scout executive in Batavia, “and this is the first time I’ve seen twins achieve that honor. Schuth was Cubmaster for a Tiger Cub pack which has produced five Eagle Scouts. Schuth has served as treasurer for the Boy Scouts for several years. The work that went into earning Eagle Scout rank, however, was all the boys’ doing. To attain Eagle Scout status, a Scout has to earn 21 merit badges, plan and carry out a service project that benefits the community, demonstrate that he lives by the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law in daily life, and successfully... The 21 merit badges must include badges in first aid, community and national citizenship, communication, cooking, personal fitness and management, swimming, communication, family life, hiking or cycling, emergency preparedness or lifesaving and... ” The Boy Scout Oath or Promise is, “On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.
