The official unveiling of the eighth-generation Toyota Hilux is approaching, and the company's Youtube channel for Thailand has released a teaser video. Two new diesel engines were also revealed. Belonging to the GD generation, they replace the KD ones that have been around since 2005. Later this year, both will also become available on the SW4 (an SUV based on the Hilux) and HiAce (a seven-seater minivan also known as the Innova). 4 : 2,395 cc displacement, 160 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. It replaces the current 2KD-FTV 2. 5-liter making 120 hp and 325 Nm. 1GD 2. 8 : It has 2,795 cc displacement, 177 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque (with five-speed manual transmission) or 450 Nm (with six-speed automatic). It will replace the current 1KD-FTV 3. 0-liter that delivers 171 hp and 343 Nm.   Wondering how to import the Toyota Hilux into the USA? Really wanting a virtually indestructible compact pickup with a turbo diesel? Sorry to disappoint, but after talking with many importers the truth is you can’t. However, you can still get a diesel engine into your Tacoma.

  

  Looking to import a Toyota Hilux into the USA? Sorry, you can't. Yet, you can go diesel with your Tacoma.

  First why the Hilux? The Toyota Hilux is a very popular truck worldwide and as the BBC show TopGear showed, it is virtually indestructible. Combine that with its compact size and the turbo diesel under the hood, it has become very appealing. The problem is that it does have the turbo diesel under the hood.

  According to several importers, they don’t know anyone who would even attempt to import it. The Environmental Protection Agency’s rules for air pollution literally makes this truck impossible to legally be imported. The truck would have to go through so much modification that it isn’t financially feasible with some estimates that you would double the sticker price.

  Now that doesn’t mean you won’t see them from time to time. There are many forum posts out there where people have spotted them. They are most likely driven across the border and are not permanent U.S. vehicles, meaning they can’t be licensed and plated like other vehicles.

  How do you then get a diesel engine into your Tacoma? Well, it isn’t so simple, but it is possible with a used Mercedes Diesel engine. Many truck owners looking for more low-end torque and the ability to run on bio-diesel are finding relatively cheap, used Mercedes Diesel engines and swapping out there gas engines. The process is pretty advanced, however, if you are handy as a mechanic, you can make it work.

  There are two ways to import a Toyota Hilux into the United States. One method is as a temporary import. Temporary imports must be returned to their country of origin accompanied by you, as specified by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The second option is to order it from the manufacturer with U.S. specifications, because there are no Toyota Hilux's on the "List of Non-Conforming Vehicles eligible for importation." Information for both of these options is available on the NHTSA website.

  While Tacoma is the most known Toyota’s compact truck, another vehicle keeps top selling position within this company. Toyota Hilux is maybe less familiar than Tacoma, but stats and numbers are telling otherwise.   Maybe Tacoma is the No1 sales truck in USA, but Toyota should follow some leads from Hilux. First step is to make Tacoma a world wide truck. Tacoma is “fun” truck, and Tundra is made for work.

Anyway, diesel vehicles sales have risen for 35 percent, so Toyota could reconsider their plans.

  

  Hilux as more powerful truck

  The Hilux was always synonym for tough vehicle. It’s chassis was strong and in many talks mentioned as indestructible. In some BBC shows it was tried to be destroyed, but all efforts from people in Top Gear show were unsuccessful. Hilux won. Well, differently from Tacoma, Hilux is taken as full size truck, while Tacoma is mid sized, and that’s why it’s chassis is stronger and more solid.
